The cursed woods are calling again, and this time some familiar names are answering. A new take on The Blair Witch Project is officially moving forward, and it’s bringing back a piece of its original DNA.
The Blair Witch Project is getting a fresh reimagining for Lionsgate, with filmmaker Dylan Clark stepping in to direct. While the plot is still under wraps, the studio says this new version will tap into the mythology that made the original such a phenomenon, while reshaping it for a new generation.
What really makes this update interesting is who’s returning. Original stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams are now attached as executive producers, alongside creators Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, plus producer Gregg Hale. That’s a serious chunk of the original creative team stepping back into the world they helped build.
This is a pretty big shift from where things stood when the reboot was first announced at CinemaCon in 2024. At the time, the original cast wasn’t exactly thrilled about being left out of the loop.
They made it clear they felt blindsided by the announcement and the sudden resurgence of their likenesses tied to a project they hadn’t agreed to.
One of the more memorable reactions came from Heather Donahue, who didn’t hold back, saying: “We had booked a couple of conventions. It’s nice to hear nice things from the fans and see the guys.
“It was feeling very sweet for the first time in the whole history of this thing. And then — boom — comes this announcement, and it’s like, motherf*ckers.”
Fast forward to now, and things seem to have smoothed over enough for Leonard and Williams to come aboard and help. It’s a welcome development, especially for longtime fans who’ve followed the franchise since its indie horror roots.
The Blair Witch Project was framed as the “real” recovered footage of three student filmmakers who vanished while investigating a local legend. That interesting setup helped turn it into a cultural moment, pulling in around $248 million worldwide and launching multiple follow-ups.
This new reboot is stacking up a strong production team as well. Horror heavyweights James Wan and Jason Blum are producing through Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, teaming with Roy Lee.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about where the story will go, but bringing back key players from the original film adds a layer of authenticity that past sequels struggled to capture.
If Clark can strike the right balance between old-school tension and modern horror sensibilities, this could end up being a seriously creepy return to the Black Hills Forest.
For now, one thing’s clear. The Blair Witch isn’t done with us yet.
