PlayStation has snuggled up quite closely to Grand Theft Auto 6 due to Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster epic not launching on PC, and that’s probably the smartest decision Sony has made in a long while. PlayStation’s controversial practices and plans are an omen concerning how the future of the video game industry will take shape, but it can effectively shield itself from rampant backlash by standing behind Grand Theft Auto 6, which isn’t even a game from a first-party PlayStation studio.
Nonetheless, it does appear as if the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro will be the ideal platforms to play Grand Theft Auto 6—not that there is much of a choice. And, before Grand Theft Auto 6 launches in no more than 49 days, PlayStation is ensuring that PS5 users have the best image quality possible.
As per PlayStation.Blog, AI upscaling has made its way to PS5, specifically for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei at the moment, via Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). Essentially, QSSR is the diet version of the PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), providing “notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.”
Whether or not you believe there is a perceivably significant improvement in the comparison PlayStation provides regarding how Fidelity mode in Marvel’s Wolverine looks with and without QSSR enabled, it’s interesting that PlayStation is endeavoring to buff the base PS5, rather than hurling all of its eggs in the PS5 Pro’s basket and hoping users all migrate to where the image quality is and always will be better.
With QSSR unveiled and patched into two AAA, first-party PlayStation games, it seems likely that PlayStation is beginning to dole this upscaling technology out in time for it to be implemented into Grand Theft Auto 6 at launch next month—that’s right, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released next month (though not with an actual disc release, of course).
Grand Theft Auto 6’s graphical fidelity looks stunning from what we’ve seen in numerous assets and Netflix’s Extended Look gameplay showcase, and QSSR should hopefully help make it even sharper and crisper on PS5. If and/or when PlayStation confirms QSSR for Grand Theft Auto 6, it’d be nice to see comparison videos that reveal what QSSR on PS5 looks like compared to what PSSR on PS5 Pro looks like.
Considering how gorgeous Red Dead Redemption 2’s visuals are, there’s no doubt that Grand Theft Auto 6 will look phenomenal. Besides, fans are likely more concerned about the fact that Grand Theft Auto 6 is reportedly locked to 30fps on PlayStation 5, anyway.
