Steam is forever handing out games for free to its users, a feature of the service that has allowed gamers to curate entire libraries of excellent games at no added cost. From AAA titles getting their prices slashed to zero to brand-new, critically acclaimed free-to-play games with sprawling worlds and plenty of content on offer, there’s always something fun and new for users to download and play without needing to break the bank.
Fortunately, among all the recently released free games on Steam are four brand-new titles that users can download and keep forever with absolutely no strings attached. There are no secret steps you have to go through in order to get them or time limits forcing feelings of FOMO. Rather, these are just four free games on Steam that anyone even remotely interested can download and play, giving them a fun-filled afternoon or two without needing to whip out their wallets.
The four new free games on Steam all offer players entirely different and unique experiences, although they may not all be the greatest games you’ve ever played. The first of these titles is punkt, a first-person arena shooter with an old-school PlayStation 1 aesthetic. It’s a frenetic shooter that prioritizes fast movement, style, and quick thinking above all else, with an incredibly quick TTK that’s propelled by the game’s unrelenting sense of momentum. If you’re looking for a fun, free, first-person competitive shooter to play with friends, punkt could be it.
The second free game on Steam is Solstice, a thought-provoking, story-focused indie game that asks the question, “If you only have five minutes left to live, what do you do?” Solstice literally gives the player just five minutes to explore its small open world, with which they can do whatever they please. There are choice-driven conversations to be had with the locals, minigames to play, ducks to be fed, and more. Once the five minutes are up, the world will end, and you’ll have to start again; so it’s really up to you what you choose to do in Solstice.
The next free Steam game is Spencer’s Spaghetti Quest. This is a game that has been in active development for quite some time, with its developer, Epitaph Games, frequently adding new levels to the ambitious project. It was released into 1.0 earlier this month, with every level now complete. While the project didn’t live up to the developer’s original vision, it does offer a wide variety of unique levels, each of which adopts vastly different mechanics and point-of-views that coalesce to create a unique experience that is the perfect showcase for why indie development is so important.
Finally, for those looking for even more free Steam games, the fourth title you can download and keep for no cost whatsoever is Coloniam. This is a Steam release of a long-running, browser-based real-time strategy MMO that sees players duke it out across the expansive surface of Earth. While the Steam version doesn’t add anything beyond another way of accessing the game, it does offer the full experience, which has proven to be a huge hit among existing fans, and a complex, in-depth grand strategy experience that’s a tad unforgiving to newcomers.
