A Romantic Train Across Canada: Planning an Unforgettable Honeymoon

Starting a marriage on a train has its own kind of magic. Perhaps it’s the swish of the rails or the sense of the world flying by outside the window as the two of you sit comfortably without anywhere to go. Either way, a journey on VIA Rail The Canadian can turn a honeymoon into a lasting love story.

This isn’t a quick trip. Toronto to Vancouver takes four nights, roughly 86 to 97 hours, across 4,466 kilometres and five provinces. It’s the longest passenger rail journey in North America, and for couples, the slowness is the point.

Why a train suits a honeymoon

Think about how you want to spend your time on your honeymoon. Time with your loved one, good food, some adventure and no hauling of luggage. Simply board the train once and your hotel comes with you. You wake up to a new view every morning without having to pack and unpack your suitcase. Dinner is served on white tablecloths in a dining car that exudes old-world charm.

You’ll meet people too, and it happens naturally, over shared meals and dome car chats. On my recent trip, the passengers included fellow newlyweds, a father visiting his daughters and a solo traveller taking a gap year. The train has a unique way of bringing people together.

Picking your cabin

This is an important decision which will decide the comfort of your journey.

Prestige Class is the top tier and well worth a look. The cabin is about 6.5 square metres, roughly 50 per cent bigger than a Sleeper Plus cabin. It has an L shaped leather sofa for the day and a double Murphy bed that folds down at night. You also get a private ensuite with a shower. All meals and drinks are included, alcohol too, along with a dedicated concierge and priority access to the Park Car. There’s lounge access in Toronto and Vancouver as well. It’s the only class where couples sleep side by side instead of in bunks.

Sleeper Plus is the middle option, and it’s still very comfortable. A private cabin for two comes with its own toilet and sink, and you share a shower. By day it’s two seats. By night it turns into upper and lower berths, so you’ll sleep apart, though the bedding is hotel quality. Some couples don’t mind at all. Others want a shared bed on their honeymoon. Only you know which camp you’re in.

Economy has reclining seats. It’s fine for a short hop, but over four nights, most couples find a sleeper worth the upgrade.

Moments you’ll remember

The Park Car is the heart of the train across Canada for couples. It sits at the very back, with a glass dome upstairs and a lounge below. Prestige guests get dome access for much of the day in peak season, while Sleeper Plus guests have set times in the evening and early morning. Watching the Rockies rise around you with a coffee in hand is the kind of moment that sticks.

The dining car is the other highlight. As meals are shared, you will find yourself sitting down with a new set of people every day. The menu is heavy on Canadian cuisine with rack of lamb, beef tenderloin, prime rib, fresh seafood and vegetarian dishes. Canadian wines and beers are available to quench your thirst, while desserts are plentiful.

Then there’s the view. You pass the Canadian Shield, the huge Prairie skies, the Rockies and, finally, the Fraser Canyon.

Before you book

Prestige cabins tend to sell out six to nine months in advance and the trains only run two to three times per week in either direction.

Leave some buffer time. The Canadian shares tracks with freight trains, and delays of four to eight hours are common. Don’t plan a flight on arrival day.

A stopover in Jasper makes a lovely pause. As for timing, summer has the longest days, fall brings quieter trains and golden colours, and winter is magical but dark. A Canadian travel expert can confirm what’s available for your dates.

The bottom line

A honeymoon on The Canadian isn’t about ticking off landmarks. It’s about slowing down together and watching a huge country roll past. It gives you time to talk, time to sit quietly, and time to start your marriage the way you mean to go on.
