Post-hardcore and alt-rock legends Thrice are reveling in the release of their 12th studio record, Horizons/West, while continuing to find new ways to both connect with and rebirth the different eras of their sound.
Speaking with Press Pass LA and reflecting on the resounding response to the new record, the band said the reaction has been among the strongest it has experienced in years.
“I would say, honestly, maybe the most positive response since the release of our 2003 record, The Artist in the Ambulance. It’s pretty wild. Everyone has loved it,” Lead vocalist and guitarist Dustin Kensrue said.
“There’s something to us having gone through the 20th anniversaries of The Illusion of Safety and The Artist in the Ambulance, revisiting those, and then consciously or subconsciously pulling some of those energies into the newer stuff, Kensrue explains.
“There’s a feeling about that record that feels like it’s pulling from everything that we’ve been doing.
PressPassLA caught up with the band recently when they visited to play Vans Warped Tour Long Beach.
Thrice is also looking ahead to a huge Halloween show supporting “old friends” My Chemical Romance at the Hollywood Bowl.
“It’s gonna be great. They’re old friends, and we’re really excited. We haven’t played with them in ages. We always dress up for Halloween shows, so we’re still trying to figure out what we’re dressing up as for that one,” Kensrue said.
And despite decades of music, one ambition remains surprisingly elusive, getting a Thrice song into a major film.
“We feel like we have fairly cinematic music. There’s a lot of dynamics, a lot of kind of sweeping feelings. The music itself is, a lot of times, telling a story, we still just haven’t had a lot of luck in getting a Hollywood placement,” he said.
Will a haunting performance at Hollywood Bowl in October make this magic happen?
We’ll be sure to keep a watch!
