Avatar movie animators react to The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender leak
Animators associated with The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender have publicly addressed the recent online leak of the film, voicing concern over the circulation of the project. The response follows the unexpected spread of the full movie across social media platforms months ahead of its official release.
The situation unfolded in April 2026, when the entire film surfaced online and began circulating widely on platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. A viral post claimed the footage had been accidentally shared via email, remaining visible for several hours before being removed due to copyright violations. The leak has since fueled further discussion online.
Following the leak, animator Julia Schoel criticized the circulation of the film and expressed frustration over the situation. The animator noted, “We worked on the aang movie for years with the expectation that’d we’d get to celebrate all of our hard work in theaters.. just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on twitter like candy.”
She also pushed back against attempts to justify the leak, writing, “I don’t like seeing people use paramount’s awful decision to remove the movie from theaters to justify leaking it.” Schoel concluded, “But pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in.”
Background artist Anna Gong also responded, describing the leak as disheartening. She wrote, “The only reason the movie looks so good is because there was so much passion directed toward making a truly special moment for ATLA.” Gong encouraged viewers to support the project through its official release.
As of now, Paramount has not issued a response to the leak.
