Archie Comics publisher Jon Goldwater has told Publisher’s Weekly that Archie Comics will release a comic series featuring Archie Andrews as a superhero but in a fashion that is “not tongue in cheek” in 2024. A serious superhero? It’s not the first time that Archie Andrews has been seen to don supertights, but it is a long time since anyone has been expected to taken that seriously. WatchArchie maybe? The Dark Riverdale Returns? Miraclejughead? They have done this kind of thing before, but only with a comedy or camp tone, like below.
Archie Comics will also return to the Afterlife With Archie series from a new perspective. The original saw the series a zombie apocalypse hit Riverdale with Archie and friends battling zombies, those who hadn’t been bitten themselves of course. Jon Goldwater described the direct market and comic book stores where Archie is exclusively distributed by Diamond Comic Distributors as “our laboratory,” where “we want to try new things” and “get feedback on IP on our characters.” That’s right, folks, you are all part of the experiment.
But Goldwater also stated that Archie also still greatly benefits from its placement at big box stores, newsstands, and supermarkets. Its growing graphic novel business, meanwhile, has distribution through Penguin Random House, which Goldwater says is is “doing an amazing job for us.”
Archie Comic Publications, Inc., is headquartered in Pelham, New York and its titles mainly feature the teenagers Archie Andrews, and the Riverdale gang including Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle, Sabrina Spellman, Josie and the Pussycats and Katy Keene. The initial Archie characters were created in 1941 by publisher John L. Goldwater and artist Bob Montana, in collaboration with writer Vic Bloom, and first appeared in Pep Comics #22. They have gained new fame with the YA-themed Riverdale TV series and a new Archie TV series set in India.
