Barack Obama shared a heartfelt and humorous tribute to wife Michelle Obama, revealing the unexpected lesson she continues to teach him after more than three decades of marriage.
Ahead of the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, the former president reflected on the woman he calls his greatest partner and biggest source of perspective in a touching video shared on Instagram.
In the clip, Michelle appears on screen asking her husband: “Who are the folks that shaped you?”
Barack’s answer left fans smiling. “I have a super hot wife,” he replied with a grin. “She taught me that a lot of times, I think I’m right, but I’m wrong, so she continually corrects me, which I think has made me much more humble, and striving to improve myself at all times.”
The candid moment offered a glimpse into the relationship that has captivated Americans since the couple first met in Chicago in the late 1980s.
A true partnership
The video was shared as part of a wider tribute to Michelle and her role in the story behind the Obama Presidential Center.
Valerie Jarrett, CEO of the Obama Foundation and one of the couple’s closest friends, reflected on first meeting Barack and Michelle more than three decades ago. “I’ve now known the Obamas for 35 years this summer,” she said.
“The one thing that struck me the first time I met them when they were just engaged was that this is a true partnership.”
Valerie explained that the couple have approached every major decision together throughout their relationship. “They faced every major decision together, and they have lived each other’s life experiences by sharing them with one another,” she added.
She also revealed that it was particularly important to Barack that Michelle’s story be fully represented within the presidential center.
“She was with him every step along the way leading up to his presidency, and she certainly was with him every step of the way during those eight years,” Valerie said.
Honest about marriage
Barack and Michelle, who married in 1992, have long been admired for their openness about the realities of marriage.
The couple share daughters Malia, 27, and Sasha, 25, and have frequently spoken about the challenges they faced balancing family life with the demands of the White House.
In a candid Instagram post in 2022, Michelle acknowledged that even the strongest relationships require work.
“Our marriage has never been perfectly 50-50,” she wrote.
“One of us is always needing more or giving more. We have to be willing to listen to each other, honestly and without defensiveness. Only then can we evolve together.”
The former First Lady has also offered advice to younger couples about avoiding unrealistic expectations. “Over the years, a lot of young people have asked me about marriage,” Michelle explained.
“And my response usually goes something like this: You have to prepare yourself for long stretches of discord and discomfort.” She continued: “You have to learn how to make real compromises in the way you’ve lived as an individual. Glamorizing a relationship while you’re dating will lead you straight to difficulty once you’re married.”
Still going strong
While the couple have never shied away from discussing the realities of marriage, Barack’s latest comments were a reminder of the deep affection that continues to underpin their relationship.
More than 33 years after saying “I do,” the former president appears just as smitten as ever.
