Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have shared a major update on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The highly anticipated finale in the beloved animated movie franchise was previously delayed.
What is the latest Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse update?
Following the release of 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, fans have eagerly awaited to witness the conclusion of the series with a third and final installment. However, the film has taken longer than expected to complete. Now, however, directors Lord & Miller have revealed the key reasons behind this situation.
Speaking to Empire, the director duo mentioned one of the biggest challenges facing the film and how they are dealing with it. “We are deep, deep in it,” said Miller.
The filmmakers revealed they are mastering portions of the film for IMAX’s expanded 1.43:1 aspect ratio. That is one of the primary reasons production is taking longer. “We’re actually going today to the IMAX headquarters to see what the footage looks like at scale, and make sure that it has the resolution that it needs to look gorgeous,” Miller added. “We’re chugging away in the edit room with the team, and it’s coming together really well. It’s a lot of movie, and a lot to do.”
“You got to keep doing something that hasn’t been done before. That’s all you got to do,” he said while accepting the challenge to deliver the movie on a big scale, no matter what.

Lord added that preserving every visual detail on the giant screen is the team’s top priority. According to Lord, the film’s artists are working to ensure the visuals meet the demands of the expanded IMAX presentation. Notably, the best thing about the latest update is that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is still on track to release next year. This means the film has not been delayed beyond its current release date.
Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse animated movie will hit theaters on June 28, 2027.
