The work of Jack Kirby, Walter Simonson, and more, curated for fans of Thor comics and Marvel’s archive of incredible art!

Continuing the showcase of characters and creators integral to Marvel Comics history, Dark Horse Books presents Bullpen Books The Art of The Mighty Thor. Following the success of the first two Bullpen Books titles The Art of the Amazing Spider-Man and The Art of Fantastic Four, editors Ian Chalgren, John Lind, and Chris Ryall focus on the work of Jack “King” Kirby and Walter Simonson across iconic issues of Thor. This oversized hardcover volume provides a glimpse into the process and production of Thor through the years, with a stunning collection of covers and original art, reproduced from Marvel’s archival scans, along with a new essay that details the history and importance of both creators’ contributions to the character, caption commentary, and an all-new introduction by Simonson.
Since his debut in 1962, Thor has remained a key character in the Marvel Universe. The Art of The Mighty Thor focuses on the work of two of Thor’s most celebrated and influential illustrators: the legendary Jack “King” Kirby and the inimitable Walter Simonson. It includes two complete stories from Kirby’s definitive run—Thor Annual #2 and Thor #134—and four complete stories from Simonson’s run—Thor #337 (the first appearance of fan-favorite character Beta Ray Bill), Thor #338, Thor #339, and Thor #340.
Dark Horse’s Bullpen Books series showcases characters and creators integral to Marvel Comics history.
About finding early inspiration in Kirby’s Thor comics, as Simonson states in his introduction, “Kirby’s drawing, however, exploded off the page. Even in panels where characters were just talking, the figures were filled with energy just in the way they interacted, gestured, and stood. For me, although I didn’t think of it in this way at the time, Jack’s work introduced me to a whole new visual language for telling stories in the comics format.”
“The brilliance of both artists’ landmark work on Thor is fully on display in this format,” said co-editor Chris Ryall. “And in addition to the gorgeous pencils and inks showcased in these Bullpen Books editions, the editorial notes throughout the book add historical insight and fun color commentary as further enhancement to the black-and-white artwork.”
