James Gunn has shared a major Clayface update.
Clayface is a new DCU movie that is currently scheduled to arrive in 2026. Directed by James Watkins, the movie will star Tom Rhys Harries as the titular Batman villain.
What did James Gunn say about Clayface?
Appearing on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, Gunn said that Clayface will be rated R.
“I mean, it’s not anything now, because the MPA has to watch it,” Gunn said. “But it’s most likely rated R. It’s pretty intense.”
Gunn also said about the movie, “Clayface was not on our [initial] checklist. But Mike [Flanagan] came in with a pitch for Clayface that was like, ‘Whoa. That is so cool.’ Then he wrote the screenplay and fulfilled doubly on that promise. The thing about Clayface that’s so cool is that Peter [Safran] and I, back when we were producing horror movies — The Belko Experiment, all these things — I’m like, ‘If we had gotten the script as a horror movie, not being part of the DCU at all.’ It’s like this amazing body horror film that we would jump at the chance to make. It’s just a great horror movie that is a great, smart, fun, fun horror movie in a genre that I happen to love, body horror.”
Gunn and Safran are producing Clayface alongside The Batman’s Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. Chantal Nong serves as an executive producer, while Hossein Amini is also a writer on the project. Watkins’ previous filmography includes 2008’s eden Lake, 2012’s The Woman in Black, 2016’s Bastille Day, and 2024’s Speak No Evil.
Clayface will be released in United States theaters on September 11, 2026, from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures. Before that in the DCU comes Superman on July 11, 2025, and Supergirl on June 26, 2026.
