Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Boston Blue season 1, episode 9!Boston Blue creator Brandon Sonnier has explained Danny’s surprising BPD decision in the midseason finale following the show’s most shocking death. The story of Boston Blue took a turn when Danny was offered a full-time position at the Boston Police Department. Weighing it all episode, he ultimately accepts to protect Jonah Silver, Lena’s half-brother, who seemingly killed mobster Flaherty while not on official police business.

Speaking with TV Insider, Sonnier unpacked how Danny’s decision to join the BPD permanently in Boston Blue stems from the connection he now feels toward the Silver family. He needs “to take the lead” on Jonah’s case in order to protect him, something he can only do as a full-time member of the city’s law enforcement:

Through the course of the episode, we see Danny struggle with fully removing himself from the NYPD and joining BPD. That’s a huge deal. He has been an NYPD cop his whole career. His family are all NYPD cops; he’s got two commissioners that came before him. So, it’s almost like we needed to orchestrate a family decision that he needed to make. And so we come to the end of this episode and we find Jonah Silver in this particular situation, we know that his family can’t investigate this crime because it involves one of their own.

But in order to take lead on this, as we’ve established, he’s gotta take that badge. We wanted to really drive it from an emotional place, from a family place, more so even than the procedure of it. In the second half of the season, we do back into the procedure of him becoming a full Boston PD cop and walking away from the NYPD. But for this moment, it is an emotional decision that he comes to in order to be there for his found family, to be there for the Silvers.

Speaking to Jonah’s situation, Sonnier admitted it’s unclear if Boston Blue‘s major character killed Flaherty, or was simply following him and witnessed the murder. He explained how episode 10 will see the events come into clearer focus, with Danny leading an investigation that unravels the layers of what actually happened to the mobster:

Those are all fantastic questions that Danny is going to have to investigate in the winter premiere. We will return to the crime scene moments where we left at the end of the midseason finale. So those questions are very much at the center of what Episode 10 is going to be about. We’re not, by our nature, a serialized show; the emotional stories carry through, but very rarely do our cases continue over, right? This, in fact, is the only time this season where we do that, and we’re treating it as sort of a two-hour case in that we’re seeing the first half in [Episode] 9, and then in 10, we’ll continue with Danny leading the investigation. So the events that went on in that room that we did not see we will discover, and in doing so, it will inform a lot of bigger questions in terms of the death of Sarah, Lena, and Jonah’s father, Ben Silver. The motives behind that are all going to be thrown into question. So it’s a chance for us to really explore that mystery and give some final answers.

Jonah was following Flaherty after the criminal was released from prison on a technicality. However, he was still responsible for the murder of Jonah’s father, Ben Silver, something that offers up the perfect motive for revenge. Danny stumbling across the scene of the crime is where the episode ends, though, making it uncertain what really happened between them.

Donnie Wahlberg and Sonequa Martin-Green in the key art for Boston Blue

While he’s going to accept his badge to keep Jonah safe, Danny’s decision will ultimately upend a number of other elements of his life. This includes his long-distance relationship with Maria Beaz, which had been built up across the previous series, along with leaving behind the rest of his family, whom he shares close connections with.

At the same time, it’ll also give him an excuse to stay on the force with his son, Sean, continuing his family bond. Since CBS renewed Boston Blue for season 2 already, it was clear Danny would be choosing to stay in the city. But, with Jonah being the catalyst for his choice, it emphasizes just how close he now feels to the Silver family.

With the first season only halfway over, it’s unclear how long Flaherty’s death will hang over Boston Blue. While Danny can do his best to protect Jonah, the investigation could point his way depending on what they find. But another twist could be coming too, which may open an even larger storyline for the show’s second half.

Boston Blue returns February 27, 2026 on CBS.
