DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE’s Shockingly Massive Budget Raises Big Questions about Its True Profitability — GeekTyrant

Marvel Studios has been trying to recapture the glory days of its once unstoppable theatrical run, but the results have been rocky. Releases like Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps didn’t hit the marks fans or Disney hoped for.

But then there’s Deadpool & Wolverine, a wild and gleefully violent team up that didn’t just pull the MCU out of its slump, it tore a hole straight through the box office ceiling.

The movie became a cultural moment, powered by the undeniable appeal of Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, Wolverine’s long awaited classic comic suit and a marketing push that made it feel like a must see event.

Even with its R rating, Deadpool & Wolverine exploded to a massive $1.338 billion worldwide. On the surface, it felt like Marvel finally had an unquestionable win again.

But things aren’t that simple. A new breakdown of the movie’s financials paints a very different picture and it’s raising eyebrows across the industry.

A detailed report from Forbes, backed by information from The Standard and That Park Place, reveals that the threequel cost far more than anyone outside Marvel realized. Early assumptions placed the budget in Marvel’s usual $200 to $250 million range. That turned out to be way off.

The UK offers up to a 25.5% refund as long as a production spends at least 10% of its budget in the country. Because of that, Marvel had to file precise financial documents, which exposed the true numbers behind the film.

By October 31, 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine had racked up a staggering £418.1 million in production costs, which translates to roughly $533.7 million USD before marketing.

This figure officially places it among the ten most expensive films ever made. The filings even noted that the movie’s “final costs exceeded the production budget.”

Since Marvel filmed primarily at Pinewood Studios and met all the requirements, it received £82 million in UK tax rebates, or about $104.7 million USD. Subtracting that from the production figure brings the net production cost to £336.1 million which is roughly $429 million USD.

Forbes also noted that $11.2 million of that went to the monthly staff of around 105 employees.

Disney never shares its marketing spend, so analysts pieced together reasonable estimates based on past Marvel blockbusters. That Park Place outlined three levels of potential marketing costs: Conservative ($100 million), Standard ($150 million) and Aggressive ($200 million or more). Given the film’s massive global promotional push, the aggressive category appears the most likely.

Add an estimated $200 million in marketing and the overall cost of Deadpool & Wolverine reaches approximately $629 million.

The movie’s global total was $1.338 billion. But studios don’t keep all of that. Theaters and international markets retain significant portions of every ticket sold. As Forbes explained, studios typically end up with roughly 51% of the box office. Rounding that down to 50%, Disney’s take comes out to around $669 million.

When the estimated expenses are subtracted from that intake, the picture becomes far less dramatic than the impressive headline numbers suggest.

Using the estimated net cost of $429 million and adding the three marketing ranges, Forbes and That Park Place mapped out three possible scenarios:

Conservative marketing spend ($100 million):

Approximate total cost: $529 million

Approximate profit: $140 million

Standard marketing spend ($150 million):

Approximate total cost: $579 million

Approximate profit: $90 million

Aggressive marketing spend ($200 million):

Approximate total cost: $629 million

Approximate profit: $40 million

So while the film was almost certainly profitable in theaters, the results look nothing like the giant payday many assumed when they saw that $1.338 billion global total.

Of course, theatrical revenue is only part of the story. Merchandise, licensing, brand collaborations and home media sales add to the movie’s overall earnings, but these numbers are rarely made public which makes a complete financial picture nearly impossible to calculate.

Production on Deadpool & Wolverine shut down during the 2023 SAG AFTRA and WGA strikes, and such delays often cause costs to spike dramatically. Even so, the idea that a billion dollar earning blockbuster might only generate a fraction of that in profit highlights how unsustainable blockbuster spending has become across the industry.

Still, despite the surprising cost, Deadpool & Wolverine remains one of the MCU’s biggest recent wins creatively and culturally.
