Disney+ is diving deeper into Japanese horror with a new live action adaptation of The Flowers of Evil, one of the most unsettling psychological stories in the anime world.
This reimagining arrives through TV Tokyo in April 2026 and will stream on Disney+, giving fans a fresh and eerie take on a manga that has lingered in the genre’s collective memory for years.
It has not yet been confirmed for North America, but considering the current demand for live-action anime projects, its arrival outside Japan feels likely.
At the center of the series are Fuku Suzuki as Takao Kasuga and Ano as Sawa Nakamura. These characters don’t rely on supernatural monsters or grotesque creatures. Instead, The Flowers of Evil digs into something far more unnerving, pushing viewers into an intimate psychological nightmare that has earned the story a place among anime’s most haunting titles.
The original manga by Shuzo Oshimi debuted in 2009 and wrapped in 2014, bringing readers into a world where Nakamura’s unsettling presence slowly unravels the ordinary.
Its tense atmosphere eventually made the leap to animation in 2013 with a thirteen episode anime from Studio Zexcs. This upcoming show also marks the second time the story has ventured into live action after a 2019 Japanese film demonstrated how well the material adapts to different formats.
With production moving forward, Suzuki reflected on stepping into Kasuga’s troubled world, sharing: “I am very happy to be playing the protagonist in this work, which is loved by many people and stirs up various emotional memories from my school days.
“I am excited to play Kasuga Takao, who has a similar aura to me, but who transforms into a character I have never played before as the story progresses. I believe that the worries and conflicts he has are things I carried with me when I was his age, and I carry with me now, albeit in varying forms.
“I would be delighted if this work could help viewers appreciate the “Flowers of Evil” within themselves and provide some nourishment to them.”
Ano also shared her connection to the material, explaining: “I was being chased by something. However, at a time when I was living without knowing what I was running away from or where I was running towards, this work was recommended to me by people around me many times, and I remember well the shock I felt when I read it.
“It was like I had ‘found it.’ And then, after several years, I found it again. I never thought I would end up playing Nakamura-san in my life. I cherished this opportunity and threw myself into the filming. I hope you don’t miss it.”
The Flowers of Evil is a project that is sure to draw a lot of attention when it hits Disney+ in 2026. Fans of horror and psychological thrillers should start keeping an eye on this one.
