Jason Momoa on if he’d be in Zack Snyder’s Escape From New York remake
When asked in a sit-down with Comic Book if Jason Momoa would ever consider taking on Snake Plissken in Zack Snyder’s planned remake of Escape from New York, he didn’t really bite. Momoa said the character has been floating around in development talks for years, but the original film already feels like its own complete thing. “Do we need to remake it,“ Momoa said.
Momoa also shared that he has a lot of respect for Kurt Russell, who originally played Snake. In fact, he said he likes Russell so much that he wouldn’t want to step in and recreate that performance, even if the role sounds tempting on paper. “I love Kurt Russell…I would never want to step into that,“ Momoa said.
The Supergirl actor also added that while he respects working with Zack Snyder, revisiting a character like Snake Plissken just comes with a lot of risk. Momoa said it’s the kind of role that would make any actor feel both excited and a bit unsure at the same time. “
Momoa put it simply, saying ”It’s one of those things where you’re like ”oh my god“ I would love to do that but at the same time I’m like (having a moment of doubt).” At the end of the day, Momoa wished whoever takes it on the best of luck, calling Snake a “great role” that comes with massive expectations.
The original Escape From New York (1981), directed by John Carpenter, follows Snake Plissken, a convicted criminal forced into a high-stakes mission. Kurt Russell plays the iconic lead role, and over time the film has grown into a loved cult classic. It’s still widely appreciated for its gritty tone, and it continues to hold solid ratings, including around 7.1 on IMDb and roughly 70% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.
