Is Doctor Doom pitting the Avengers against the X-Men? A rumor for Avengers: Doomsday reveals the film may adapt one of the franchise’s most iconic storylines.
For as thorough as the rumor mill has gotten over the years, Marvel seems to be doing an uncharacteristically good job keeping details about Avengers: Doomsday under wraps. While there were some leaks about the X-Men appearing alongside in the Avengers in the upcoming film, the reveal that Doctor Doom would be the main villain came as a complete surprise. And now, even with production starting in earnest, fans have no clue what plans the villain has in store.
The first inklings fans have about Doctor Doom’s plans in Avengers: Doomsday actually come from the Spanish-language news site QuidVacuo. The outlet revealed that the film will actually be pitting the X-Men against the Avengers, instead of the two hero teams coming together to fight Doctor Doom. Though, of course, the report did reveal that it would ultimately be the villain who was orchestrating the conflict behind-the-scenes.
Will The Avengers Fight The X-Men?
The article goes on to say that Doctor Doom has to primary reasons for having the two factions fight in Avengers: Doomsday. The first is to, obviously, weaken both the Avengers and X-Men for his plans. The second, and perhaps more interesting, part of this rumor reveals that Doctor Doom is actually seeking a power that is capable of reviving his old universe, which was seemingly destroyed.
While the rumor doesn’t reveal the exact power source that Doctor Doom is hunting, one could bet dollars to donuts that he’s trying to obtain the Phoenix Force. Not only is it the strongest entity available to either the Avengers and X-Men, but it’s a being intrinsically tied to death and rebirth. If this is true, one should expect Jean Grey (or multiple!) to appear in Avengers: Doomsday set photos sometime soon.
