To the casual bystander, it can be hard to keep track of Dragon Ball Z characters, and Goku is a big reason for the potential confusion. While the protagonists of other anime are often modest enough to stick to one appearance, Goku is always showing up in some new form or another, with plenty of different hair colors and styles to match.
It comes as no particular surprise, then, that Goku is still up to these constant metamorphoses even years after the end of Dragon Ball Z itself. The latest makeover comes courtesy of Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra, a free-to-play game that launched in 2025.
In a video on Bandai Namco Entertainment’s official mobile games YouTube channel, Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra dropped a look at Super Saiyan God SS Son Goku in the game. For the unitiated, the SS is short for a second Super Saiyan. Unlike the regular Super Saiyan God form, Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Goku takes on a blue-haired appearance and obtains even more power to match.
The new depiction of this form arrives in Season 7 of Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra, which celebrates the one-year anniversary of the game, and follows the recent releases of Super Gogeta and Super Saiyan God SS Vegeta. The event is officially live now, and Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra is also offering in-game P7G-Capsules to those who like and share a tweet advertising the new form for Goku.
The introduction of Super Saiyan God SS Goku to the game doesn’t seem to come as a surprise to most players. Not only have powerful Goku variants been common in the game’s updates so far, but the launch of Super Saiyan God SS Vegeta felt like an obvious stepping stone to this release. It’s also no surprise that it’s yet another DPS character, as the game has steadfastly avoided the opportunity to release a tank version of the character.
Nonetheless, it’s still a significant update, especially considering the future of the game. Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra is set to receive a major overhaul by the end of the year, switching to a third-person perspective and shaking up the gameplay in Season 8. As such, Season 7 is the last hurrah for fans of the game as it’s existed so far. Many are unhappy about the changes, which seem more targeted at bringing in a wider audience than pleasing current players.
Hopefully, Bandai Namco will manage to deliver a new version of Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra that builds on its strengths rather than losing them entirely. In the meantime, Dragon Ball Z fans might want to get all the fun they can out of Season 7, especially if Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Goku sparks any joy.
