Elizabeth Debicki, the Emmy-nominated actress who portrayed Princess Diana in Netflix‘s The Crown, said that the royal drama concluded with an appropriate number of six seasons.
“I think it ended in the right place, really,” Debicki, who has played Princess Di for the final two seasons, told People. “I think it respected its own cycle in a way.”
Since its premiere in 2016, The Crown has garnered 21 Emmy wins, including Best Drama across four seasons, with an additional seven nominations for Season 6 this year.
“It always kind of knew where it was going, and then I think there was a sense from the writing from Glenn Garner Peter [Morgan] as well, that it understood its own end in a way. It’s very delicate, I think,” Debicki said.
The actress added, “He did an amazing job wrapping up such an enormous journey. I don’t really like the word journey, but it was a big journey for people to go on. When you commit to watching six seasons of a show, you need it to end properly.”

Taking over from Emma Corrin, who portrayed a young Diana in Season 4, Debicki’s portrayal traces the beloved figure’s final days ahead of her fatal car crash in August 1997.
“I thought it was very respectful, and I know that the depth and degree of conversation around how to end the series was immense, and I thought it was really kind of delicate and intricately done,” Debicki said of the show’s final season.
Also nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series alongside Debicki are her The Crown peer Lesley Manville, Christine Baranski for The Gilded Age, and The Morning Show stars Greta Lee, Holland Taylor, Nicole Beharie and Karen Pittman.
