It turns out even Emma Stone couldn’t crack Andrew Garfield’s web of lies. The actress recently revealed that her The Amazing Spider-Man co-star kept his Spider-Man: No Way Home comeback a secret from her too, even when she asked him directly.
Stone first swung into the Spider-Man universe as Gwen Stacy in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, later returning for the 2014 sequel. That film was meant to set up a massive franchise, including The Amazing Spider-Man 3, Sinister Six, and even a Venom spinoff, but Sony’s plans were scrapped after the sequel’s underwhelming performance.
When the web-slinger eventually made his way to the MCU with Tom Holland taking over the mantle in Captain America: Civil War, it looked like Garfield’s chapter had officially closed. But years later, the actor pulled off one of Marvel’s greatest surprises by reprising his role in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home right alongside Tobey Maguire.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz, Stone admitted that Garfield didn’t just lie to fans, he lied to her too. She recalled:
“I asked him if he was gonna be in that [movie] and he was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ I was like, ‘What?’ Oh, I guess that means no, but it wasn’t no, it was yes. Good for him. He kept it really close to the vest.”
When Horowitz mentioned the emotional moment between Garfield’s Peter and another version of Gwen in No Way Home, Stone confessed she still hasn’t watched the movie.
“I actually haven’t seen it, no. It would be very emotional, I’m sure. I’ve heard it was fantastic. I will see it eventually.”
Clearly, watching No Way Home hasn’t been high on Stone’s to-do list. She’s been busy moving on with other projects, leaving her Marvel days in the rearview. And since Gwen remains dead in Garfield’s universe, fans probably shouldn’t expect her to show up in Avengers: Secret Wars.
As for Garfield, he insists he’s not returning for any upcoming Marvel movies, but after fooling everyone (including Stone) once before, can anyone really take his word for it? Rumors continue to swirl that both Garfield and Maguire could appear again, possibly in Avengers: Doomsday next year.
Whether or not he suits up again, you have to hand it to Garfield for his commitment. Even in the face of leaks and fan theories, he never broke down. That secrecy help make the reveal of all three Spider-Men sharing the screen one of the most unforgettable movie moments in recent memory.
Reflecting on her time in the Spidey universe earlier this year, Stone said:
“I really loved doing ‘Spider-Man.’ I loved everybody I worked with. I met Andrew [Garfield] there. I met Sally Field. Marc Webb was wonderful. It was a really special time in my life.
“That’s a recurring theme: The people more than the film itself is what sticks with me for so long. I only have fond memories of this experience.”
