Emmy-winning filmmaker Adam R. Wood will spotlight an emotional story of survival, music, and legacy this week as his documentary Hold Onto Your Music: A Mother’s Legacy serves as the Closing Night film for the Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival on May 19 at the Museum of Tolerance.
Co-directed alongside Academy Award nominee Josh Aronson, the documentary tells the remarkable true story of Lisa Jura, a gifted young Jewish pianist forced to flee Nazi-occupied Vienna aboard the Kinder transport at just 14 years old. Carrying only her sheet music and the memory of her mother’s final words, Lisa rebuilt her life in wartime London through the power of music and resilience.
The film draws from rare archival footage, restored recordings, and moving performances from Lisa’s daughter, renowned concert pianist and author Mona Golabek. It also expands on the story first introduced in Golabek’s bestselling memoir and acclaimed stage adaptation The Pianist of Willesden Lane, which has reached millions worldwide through live performances, books, and educational programs.
Blending historical storytelling with deeply personal emotion, Hold Onto Your Music: A Mother’s Legacy explores themes of family, remembrance, survival, and the lasting impact of art across generations.
The screening marks a major moment for the festival, which continues to celebrate Jewish stories, filmmakers, and cultural voices through film and discussion. Following its Los Angeles debut, the documentary will continue its run on the festival circuit throughout the year.
With its moving message about hope and the enduring power of music, the film is expected to resonate strongly with audiences both inside and beyond the Jewish community. Get your tickets to the Closing Night screening of “Hold Onto Your Music: A Mother’s Legacy”.
