It was game on at Comic-Con as Bandai delivered a high-energy panel celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. Voice actors Mark Hildreth (Heero Yuy), Scott McNeil (Duo Maxwell), Brad Swaile (Quatre Raberba Winner), and executive producer Naohiro Ogata took the stage alongside moderator Jacki Jing to unveil several upcoming projects.
Fans were treated to news of a 4K theatrical screening of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz coming soon to the U.S., as well as a newly announced Japanese adaptation of Gundam Wing, directed by Toru Iwasawa. The panel also teased limited edition anniversary merchandise and revealed that remastered episodes of the original series will be available for free streaming on YouTube’s GundamInfo channel. The panel introduced new character designs for the major pilots, as well as a new worldwide portal for franchise.
Hildreth, McNeil, and Swaile spoke passionately about the enduring legacy of Gundam Wing—from its serialized storytelling to its vibrant fanbase. For Swaile in particular, the experience was transformative, sparking a deeper creative connection with anime. He even performed a playful rap he wrote while working on the series.
“I was lucky enough to work on five different Gundam series, but it was because of Gundam Wing that I got invited to my first convention 20-some-odd years ago, and that really introduced me to a culture I didn’t know existed,” said Swaile. “Being a huge Halloween nerd and an art guy and a music guy and a builder and a tinkerer and creator of things—I found my people.”
Hildreth and McNeil were blown away by the emotional resonance of the stories in addition to the complexity of the animation.
“It was like a real treat because there was a lot of depth to it,” said Hildreth. “There were all these themes that you got to explore, and that’s very rare in a recording studio.”
McNeil, who had never worked in anime before, reflected on the sense of discovery and excitement the project sparked.
“When you get the gig, it’s like, you book a show, and you’re doing this character named Duo Maxwell. That’s great! But very quickly we started to go, ‘This is a cool story.’ And then I started to very quickly learn the importance of the series,” McNeil recalled. “So, there was this kind of buzz that we’re doing something really cool right now.”
The panel wrapped with Ogata sharing his thoughts on the franchise’s continued success, followed by special video messages from the voice actors of the Japanese adaptation, who delivered heartfelt congratulations and hopes for the future of the Gundam Wing universe.
All in all, it was a full-throttle celebration of all things Gundam, met with overwhelming enthusiasm from a devoted crowd that couldn’t get enough.
