September 2026 is slowing down when it comes to theatrical releases, but it will bring some exciting movies, such as the return of a family of witches, a new installment in the Resident Evil franchise, an animated adventure, and more. As the summer comes to an end and the movie industry prepares for the spooky season, there’s a brief moment of transition when it comes to theatrically released movies, meaning that there are fewer big releases, as these are saved for the end of the year.

Still, September is bringing a variety of movies to theaters for everyone to enjoy. August 2026 saw the theatrical release of movies like the rom-com One Night Only, the sci-fi movie The End of Oak Street, the biographical drama Tony, and the long-awaited release of Coyote vs. ACME. In addition to new releases, September will also see the re-release of Cars and an extended version of Avengers: Endgame, to celebrate their 20th anniversary and the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday, respectively.

As for new movies, September will welcome the long-awaited return of the Owens family, the latest horror movie by Zach Cregger, David Ayer’s latest thriller, and an animated adventure from DreamWorks, ensuring that there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Onslaught

Directed by Adam Wingard, Onslaught is an action slasher movie starring Adria Arjona as Celeste, an Army sniper. Celeste lives in a trailer park with her young daughter, and she must protect her from a trio of super soldiers who escaped from a secret military facility and have an insatiable thirst for blood. Also starring in Onslaught are Alex Pereira, Dan Stevens, Drew Starkey, Rebecca Hall, and Michael Biehn. According to Wingard, Onslaught takes place in the same continuity as his 2014 action horror movie The Guest (via Bloody Disgusting).

Runner

Runner Will Be Released On September 11, 2026

Runner is an action comedy thriller directed by Scott Waugh. Runner follows Hank (Alan Ritchson), a delivery man bringing a new liver to a sick girl. Hank is escorted by Ben (Owen Wilson), the man in charge of bringing the liver, but Hank soon learns that a liver sells too well on the black market, and there are ruthless mercenaries out there who want it for that exact reason. However, Hank is determined to bring the liver to the girl at any cost. Also starring in Runner are Rodrigo Santoro, Adriana Barraza, Leila George, and Sullivan Stapleton.

The Uprising

The Uprising Will Be Released On September 11, 2026

Directed by Paul Greengrass, The Uprising is an action period drama starring Andrew Garfield as Ploughman, the leader of a rebellion against the tyranny of Richard II of England (Woody Norman). The Uprising follows Ploughman as he forms an army to go against the King’s people in a ruthless battle for survival and justice. Also starring in The Uprising are Jamie Bell, Tom Hollander, Jonny Lee Miller, Katherine Waterston, and Thomasin McKenzie.

Practical Magic 2

Practical Magic 2 Will Be Released On September 11, 2026

After a long wait of almost three decades, the Owens family is back in Practical Magic 2. Directed by Susanne Bier, and based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic, Practical Magic 2 is set 25 years after the events of the first movie, and reunites the audience with sisters Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman), their aunts Frances (Stockard Channing) and Jet (Dianne Wiest), and Sally’s now grown-up daughters Kylie (Joey King) and Antonia (Maisie Williams).

When Kylie uncovers the family’s secrets and develops dark abilities, the Owens women are forced to face their family’s origins, multi-generational trauma, and find a way to finally break the family’s curse. For that, they travel to the UK to confront the source of their magic and thus save future generations. Also starring in Practical Magic 2 are Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod.

Resident Evil

Resident Evil Will Be Released On September 18, 2026

Resident Evil is the second reboot of the film series, and it’s set parallel to the game Resident Evil 2, though in a modern setting. Directed by Zach Cregger, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier on his way to making a delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital – unfortunately, an outbreak takes place in the city at the same time, and so Bryan is forced to fight for his life in a city now plagued by infected monsters. Also starring in Resident Evil are Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Johnno Wilson.

The Weight

The Weight Will Be Released On September 18, 2026

The Weight is a historical drama movie directed by Padraic McKinley. The Weight takes viewers back to 1933 Oregon to meet Samuel Murphy (Ethan Hawke), a man who is separated from his daughter and sent to a brutal work camp. Warden Clancy (Russell Crowe) tells Murphy that he can be released early if he smuggles gold through deadly wilderness, but what Murphy isn’t aware of is the betrayal that plagues the crew. Also starring in The Weight are Julia Jones, Avi Nash, Austin Amelio, George Burgess, and Alec Newman.

Heart of the Beast

Heart of the Beast Will Be Released On September 25, 2026

Heart of the Beast is a survival thriller directed by David Ayer and starring Brad Pitt. Heart of the Beast follows James Belmont (Pitt), a Special Forces officer, and his retired combat dog Odin after a plane crash in Alaska. Now stranded in the wilderness, James and Odin face harsh weather conditions and other dangers, forcing them to fight for their survival while also proving the strength of their bond. Also starring in Heart of the Beast are J. K. Simmons and Anna Lambe.

Charlie Harper

Charlie Harper Will Be Released On September 25, 2026

Charlie Harper is a romance movie directed by Mac Eldridge and Tom Dean (and it’s completely unrelated to Two and a Half Men). Charlie Harper is the story of Harper (Emilia Jones) and Charlie (Nick Robinson), who fall in love with each other and decide to leave their lives behind to build one together in a new city. While Harper builds her career as a chef, Charlie struggles to find his path, and they start facing unexpected challenges in their relationship. Also starring in Charlie Harper are Nicholas Cirillo, Virginia Tucker, Sebastian Delascasas, and Ja’Quan Henderson.

Forgotten Island

Forgotten Island Will Be Released On September 25, 2026

Forgotten Island is an animated fantasy comedy movie directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado. Set in the 1990s in the Philippines, Forgotten Island follows childhood friends Jo (H.E.R.) and Raissa (Liza Soberano), who promise to be friends forever. However, this is put to the test when Raissa prepares to move to the US for college, with Jo trying to persuade her to stay. The two suddenly find themselves transported through a portal to a fantastical world called Nakali, but the longer they stay there, the more their memories fade.
