Fan poll: 5 best Seattle bands

The Pacific Northwest has been a cultural hub for decades, home to Twin Peaks, Sub Pop, and riot grrrl. More specifically, Seattle has its own storied history, exploding from the birthplace of Jimi Hendrix into the home of grunge in the early ’90s. Steered by Sub Pop, the indie label marketed the “Seattle sound” impressively, helping Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden go from underground heroes to mainstream stars. By 1991, the arrival of Nevermind, Ten, and Badmotorfinger signaled a revolution, ushering in a sludgier version of punk that kept its rebellion, energy, and decibel level intact. With this in mind, we asked our readers to tell us the best Seattle bands — from the old guard to the new. Their answers went in all directions, and you can find the top fan picks ranked below.

5. The Home Team

The Home Team have been grinding within their hometown scene for well over a decade — and it’s paid off. Their early records slotted into vibrant pop punk, but as the years progressed, so did their sound. Calling themselves “heavy pop,” the change-up brought new momentum, touring with Mayday Parade, State Champs, and Neck Deep, plus dates with Bilmuri ahead. “The people that weren’t down with our new sound back in 2015 were probably not people that we were going to keep around as friends anyway,” the band said in a 2024 interview. “To be honest, the vast majority of the scene was actually insanely supportive. I can’t tell you how many metal shows we played as a pop-punk band, and they loved it.”

4. Sunny Day Real Estate

When Sub Pop released Sunny Day Real Estate’s debut album, Diary, in 1994, it had only been a month since Kurt Cobain died by suicide. While the city was in mourning, the group were riding emo’s second wave — transitioning from the Revolution Summer blueprint to a softer approach with varying time signatures. The songs on Diary voiced their frustration and rage in a far different way than their grunge-y Seattle peers — via slow-burning urgency that hit a sweet spot between punk and pop. The band’s rhythm section, Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith, would go on to play on Foo Fighters’ The Colour and the Shape before returning for 1995’s LP2.

3. The Disorderlies

The Disorderlies are veterans of Seattle’s punk scene, having played shows all around the city for over a decade. Live clips scattered around YouTube reveal a band that specialize in fast, melodic punk rock, putting on a performance that’s tightly arranged, high in energy, and a blast to sing along to. Those shows are, of course, heightened by the chemistry of people who prioritize the live experience over hitting the studio, cheekily referenced on their first and only album, 2022’s 10 Years Later. Up next, the band are playing an all-ages gig at Lucky Liquor with Kapslock and We Might Die on Saturday.

2. Filth is Eternal

Seattle seeps into the very DNA of Filth Is Eternal, having absorbed its rich cultural legacy over the course of four albums. “We joke about the sounds of songs while we’re writing them,” guitarist Brian McClelland said in a 2023 interview. “‘Man, this song sounds like Nirvana-meets-Magrudergrind!’ Or, ‘This sounds like Trap Them meets Gin Blossoms!’ Coming from Seattle, a little grunge always bleeds in.” In a nod to their city, they tapped fellow Seattleite Johnny Whitney of the Blood Brothers for their latest full-length, Impossible World, which stretches their sound from D-beat hardcore to grimier melodism that proves a real growth.

1. Kids on Fire

Thanks to TikTok, Kids on Fire fans really showed up for this poll. Taking influence from West Coast punks like Social Distortion and the Bouncing Souls, the group put their own spin on Seattle’s explosive past through self-described “bummercore.” “The best way to describe what we write is depressing lyrics that sound perky,” Kevin LaBarre said in a 2023 interview. The band are also nothing without their local scene, citing Victory Lounge, Kraken Bar, and Funhouse as a few crucial spaces when they were coming up in the 2010s. For a taste of their melodic streetpunk, put on 2023’s The Best of the Worst of Times.
