Gwyneth Paltrow is headed to Netflix. She’ll star in The Apology, a new A24 drama that the streamer has ordered for two seasons, and it’s her first lead role in a TV series.
As reported first by Variety, Paltrow plays Evelyn Amspoker, whose son was murdered 18 years ago in a cold case that gripped the nation. When a stranger suddenly appears and confesses, justice finally seems possible. But Evelyn and her husband, Caleb, learn the killer may receive a reduced sentence, and they decide to take matters into their own hands.
Thomas Vinterberg, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Another Round, directs. Joe Murtagh, known for The Woman in the Wall, wrote the series and will serve as showrunner. Paltrow, Murtagh, Vinterberg and Joe Hipps of Cut To are executive producers, with A24 and Cut To producing.
Deadline reported that Netflix bought the competitive project preemptively. The order is a straight-to-series, two-season commitment.
Netflix hasn’t announced an episode count or premiere date yet, but stay tuned.
