Jason Momoa makes the leap from Aquaman to Lobo

As filmmaker and DC Studios co-head James Gunn as repeatedly stated, DC Studios is opting for “soft a reboot” approach. Among the causalities is fan-favorite Jason Momoa who breathed new life into Aquaman. Given the lukewarm reception of the recent Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom film, it doesn’t come as much of a shock. However, speculation has run rampant in the last few years that Momoa wasn’t completely done with the DC Universe and in fact was in consideration to play alien bad boy Lobo, a casting choice met by approval by the fan community. Today Deadline announced that Jason Momoa has officially been cast to play Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow feature film. Momoa took to Instagram to confirm and voice his immense enthusiasm.

Gunn likewise took to social media to welcome Jason Momoa back to the DC Universe.

Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, the alien bounty hunter Lobo debuted in Omega Men #3. As the last member of the Czarnian, Lobo is often viewed as the “anti Superman” so it’s not surprising that the two have often been paired against each other over the years. Lobo has appeared in both animation and live-action, most notably the ’90s Superman: The Animated Series voiced by Brad Garrett and the Krypton live-action series played by Emmett J. Scanlan.

It goes without saying the DC Comics couldn’t quite get its own cinematic universe off the ground unlike Marvel Studios. However, under the direction of Gunn and Peter Safran and with Marvel Studios facing its own struggles in recent years, it looks like DC Studios has found its footing.

Filming for the aforementioned Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is reportedly set to begin next month with actress Milly Alcock set to play the titular role. The film will be directed by Craig Gillespie from a script by Ana Nogueira and is based on 2022 comic book series from writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely.
