Javier Bardem is heading to HBO, and he’s bringing a very different version of Miami with him.
HBO has ordered The Spread, a new drama series starring and executive produced by Bardem, according to an exclusive report from TheWrap.
Written by Bill Dubuque and Sean Sansiveri, the series is set in Miami as the city evolves into what the creators describe as “Wall Street South,” a new center of wealth, power and financial influence.
The story follows a visionary billionaire who brings together brilliant, ambitious and dangerous players as he attempts to shift the center of economic gravity toward Miami, and determine how long the party can last.
That means hedge funds, enormous wealth, ruthless competition, sex, nightlife and plenty of ambition will all collide against the backdrop of one of America’s most rapidly evolving cities.
And HBO wasn’t the only network or streamer interested. The Spread landed at HBO following a bidding war that included Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+ and Apple.
Bardem isn’t the only major name attached. Kingsman filmmaker Matthew Vaughn is set to direct and executive produce, while Brad Weston of Makeready and executives from Topic Studios are also among the executive producers. The series is a co-production with Fifth Season TV Studio.
For HBO, the project offers another glossy, high-stakes drama built around power and ambition, but with Miami itself positioned as one of the central characters.
“Wall Street South” may be a fictionalized concept for the series, but the idea of Miami becoming an increasingly important center for finance, technology and wealth gives The Spread a distinctly contemporary backdrop.
A premiere date has not yet been announced.
