Ben Affleck revealed how Jeremy Renner’s input during one of The Town’s scenes proved significant. He added that he was also nervous during the making of the movie, seemingly questioning whether his career would stay afloat.
The actor desperately wanted the movie to do well while detailing a moment where he tried to write a Matt Damon-style line. As he reconsidered the lines he had written, Affleck said Renner’s valuable feedback helped him improvise.
How Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner improvised The Town’s iconic scene
In a conversation with Variety, Affleck discussed the making of The Town. He revealed that he was very nervous making it as he consistently had thoughts about his future in his acting career. He added, “I thought, ‘Okay, there’s a lot riding on this. Like, I have to get this. This movie’s got to work. It’s got to be good.’”
Affleck recalled a scene from The Town where he was supposed to go get Renner and get in the car. At the time, he wanted to write a “Damon kind of line.” So, he said that he just sat outside the set and wrote the line, hoping to try the idea.
“Maybe it’s too much. Maybe it won’t, you know, it’s like pushing it a little bit. And I remember Jeremy was like, ‘Yeah.’ And then you just say like what car we got to take because like all the rest of this stuff goes without saying. And he liked it. So, I tried it, did a couple takes, and I ended up liking how it worked,” he added, referring to how Renner’s feedback helped him shape the scene and ultimately make it one of the movie’s most memorable ones.
