Jerry Garcia’s Legacy Gets Permanent Bay Area Home

More than three decades after Jerry Garcia began imagining an immersive experience built around his music and art, plans are taking shape for a broader institution dedicated to the Grateful Dead co-founder’s creative legacy. Garcia’s family, in partnership with archival media platform Starchive and project coordinator Christopher McCutcheon, announced today (Oct. 23) that they intend to establish the Jerry Garcia Music Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Envisioned as a living cultural center rather than a conventional museum, the facility would bring together the late Garcia’s musical catalog, visual art, historical artifacts and conservation work, tracing an artistic life that extended from the 1960s counterculture into the present. Plans call for a fan-accessible research library and physical archive, a digital preservation hub, galleries devoted to Garcia’s art and instruments and exhibitions exploring the blues, folk, country and jazz traditions that shaped him.

The center would also spotlight Garcia and his collaborators’ innovations in live concert sound design, a less immediately visible but hugely consequential part of the Grateful Dead’s story. A performance center and screening room would host live music and film presentations, while an artist-in-residence program would support emerging and established creators in recording and visual arts. Interactive environmental exhibits would reflect Garcia’s advocacy for coral reefs and rainforest preservation, with charitable initiatives supporting ocean conservation, music education and the arts.

The family is also inviting Garcia’s heirs to contribute personal content and memorabilia, and the center intends to review fan-donated materials for inclusion in its collection. “Music and art naturally build community,” added Manasha Garcia, Jerry’s wife and co-founder of Jerry Garcia Music Arts. “In welcoming fan contributions and building an accessible archive, we honor the vibrant community that grew around my husband’s commitment to creative freedom, live sound innovation and planetary stewardship.” Architectural plans, programming and development milestones for the center will be announced as the project progresses.

The news follows the unveiling in August of Eyes of the World: The Jerry Garcia Experience, an ambitious immersive exhibition conceived by Garcia and producer Cary Granat more than 30 years ago. Scheduled to launch in San Francisco in early 2027 before traveling to other major U.S. cities, the 40,000-square-foot experience will combine music, artwork and recorded reflections across eight experiential rooms, culminating in a performance space where tribute bands will play Garcia’s music. Chicago, Nashville, New York and Los Angeles are among the planned stops; venue details, dates and ticket information have yet to be revealed.
