Y’all remember when this divorce was amicable? Lately Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello have seemed anything but!
A few months back Sofia confirmed the word on the street about the couple’s breakup, telling El País:
“My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom.”
That is pretty much exactly what sources had been saying about the couple, right from the start of news of the divorce. He wanted kids, and the Modern Family star — being a bit older and already having raised a son to adulthood — had no interest. And ultimately he realized it was more important to him than he’d thought. That was the story we heard, that was what she seemed to be backing up.
Things got spicy last week when Joe basically called her a LIAR over the whole thing!

The Deal or No Deal Island host told Men’s Journal what she said was “simply not true.” He claimed they did have “a huge conversation right out of the gate” about kids, and she wasn’t opposed. He says they even tried, and it just didn’t take! And now the idea he left over the kids thing is offending him! He said:
“To be painted as if I had some sort of midlife crisis, and after nine years, turned to somebody and gave them an ultimatum of, ‘Do this potentially unhealthy thing to your body, or else I’m gone’? That’s never who I was.”
But the thing is… He does want to have kids with his younger girlfriend, right?
We’ve heard he and Caitlin O’Connor had been kind of fast-tracking the idea of starting a family, even though they hadn’t been together very long. It really fit the narrative Sofia was apparently backing. And it turns out… Joe is kinda confirming that part!
Speaking on the Podcrushed podcast on Wednesday, he said having kids was “definitely on the docket” for him right now. When asked directly by host Penn Badgley about having kids, the Magic Mike alum said:
“Yeah. For sure. That was never not on the table. At every stage in life that was always, you know, that was something that was always talked about. That was always on the forefront of any serious relationship that I got into.”
Interesting wording, no? Joe also said he’s “always wanted to be a father,” quipping that he has BDE — “big dad energy”:
“I think I have a lot to give in that department.”
He also says he enjoys being a “fun uncle” to his two nieces — something he’s shown on his Instagram page:
So it sounds like Joe and Caitlyn HAVE talked kids, and really early in the relationship! Whether that was because of what Sofia said or Sofia said it because it was always something he was going to want — so much that he was willing to file for divorce — well, that’s something you’ll have to decide for yourself. Kind of a he said, she said situation, isn’t it?
