Matt Bellamy has opened up for the first time about his secret split from his wife of six years, Elle Evans.
The Muse frontman, 48, confirmed that the couple separated last summer in a new interview, admitting that their breakup centered around “unexpected circumstances.”
Matt, who was previously engaged to Kate Hudson, said their split is hard to explain, but he had to “prioritize” their two children, daughter Lovella, six, and son George, two. Matt also shares son Bingham, 14, with Kate.
“It’s one of those situations that involves something that people wouldn’t normally think it is,” he told The i Paper. “It was a set of really unexpected circumstances.
“It’s the kind of thing no one really prepares for in life,” he continued, admitting he wasn’t sure how to proceed.
“It threw me off, and I had to prioritise looking after the kids and creating stability at home.”
Matt admitted that he channeled his post-breakup feelings into Muse’s new album, The Wow! Signal, which he wrote most of last autumn, “right in the depths of this life-changing experience.”
“It was just – boom. It would just pour out of me. It might have been the easiest album for me to make, because it was such a catharsis. It became a lifeline for me,” he explained.
Discussing some of the songs on the record, he said: “‘Shimmering Scars’ is tricky. I think ‘Space Debris’ is one of my most personal tunes. But it’s not all darkness. The whole album isn’t just whining.”
Matt and Elle dated for four years before they tied the knot in Malibu on August 10, 2019, with their close friends and family in attendance.
Elle wowed in a strapless lace Martina Liana gown, which featured a sweetheart neckline and long train.
The model wore her hair up in a bun and looked delighted as she walked hand-in-hand with her new husband, who wore a stone-coloured three-piece suit and pink bow tie.
“Mr. & Mrs. Bellamy,” Matt captioned a wedding photo on Instagram. Elle shared the same photo on her Instagram account, which Matt’s ex-fiancée Kate commented on with a series of heart emojis.
Matt and Elle started dating in 2015 and announced their engagement in December 2017, during a romantic holiday in Fiji.
Sharing their happy news, Elle described Matt as “the man of my dreams.”
“I can’t imagine our lives apart. What I can imagine is a bright future full of love & light, family & friends, moments that turn into cherished memories, and a lifetime of pure bliss,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.
The British musician was previously engaged to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actress Kate, but the pair called time on their four-year relationship in December 2014.
The pair have remained on good terms since their split, and Kate is now engaged to Danny Fujikawa, with whom she shares daughter Rani, who was born in October 2018.
