Mahershala Ali Confirms He’s Done With BLADE and Says Marvel Studios “Didn’t Want To Do It” — GeekTyrant

After years of delays, rewrites, director changes, and endless speculation, Mahershala Ali has finally closed the door on Blade. Based on his latest comments, it doesn’t sound like there was any mystery about why the movie never happened.

When Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige surprised Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 by announcing that Ali would star as the MCU’s new vampire hunter, it felt like a perfect match. Fans were excited, Ali seemed passionate about the character, and Blade looked like it would become one of Marvel’s most unique projects.

Instead, the reboot spent years trapped in development, cycling through multiple writers and directors without ever making it in front of cameras. Now, Ali has confirmed what many fans had already started to suspect. He’s moved on, and he believes Marvel Studios simply chose not to make the movie.

Feige recently addressed the troubled production, saying he feels like a “gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala.” While he tried to acknowledge the disappointment, Ali’s own perspective is much more direct.

Speaking with GQ, the two-time Oscar winner confirmed that he has officially walked away from Blade and doesn’t have any interest in revisiting the conversation.

When asked whether the project was any closer to happening, Ali responded: “Not with me. The best way I can answer this question is, when I look at what is for me, is it was either this or that—and I’ll take this.

“No offense to them. I’ve been doing this professionally for pushing 30 years now, and one thing I’ve learned is that what is for you is for you and what is not is not. For whatever reason, that project is not for me.”

He then made it clear where he believes the responsibility lies. “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on.

“Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother feels very much in alignment with the type of work I want to be known for. I don’t really want to be known for remakes. I’d love to do original work that resonates with people and impacts them in unique ways.”

Those comments leave very little room for interpretation. Ali isn’t suggesting scheduling conflicts or creative differences got in the way. His view is simple. If Marvel wanted Blade to happen, it would’ve happened.

Instead, he’s looking ahead, and his upcoming film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, the latest film from Bassam Tariq, who was once attached to direct Blade before leaving the project during its turbulent development.

Ali even explained that the time he spent preparing for Marvel’s vampire hunter wasn’t wasted because it ultimately helped shape his performance in Tariq’s new movie.

“So, I’m good. [Laughs.] Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. So we’re not doing the movie.

“When I look at this and Blade, I couldn’t have done both, and the reason this even exists is because that project fell apart and Bassam had the time, space, energy, and focus to go and write this and then re-approach me.”

He continued: “I was able to use those skills that I had been working on for over a year training for Blade. In that way, I feel creatively redeemed on some level, just in my own journey between me, myself, and I.

“But I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them. They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question.”

Ali has officially put Blade behind him, and he’s made it clear he doesn’t intend to keep revisiting a project that never crossed the starting line.

The closest fans ever came to seeing Ali’s version of Blade was his voice cameo during the post-credits scene in Eternals. Since then, Wesley Snipes made his celebrated return as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine, while Marvel’s animated Marvel Zombies featured Blade Knight, a character clearly modeled after Ali’s likeness and voiced by Todd Williams.

Looking back, Blade has become one of Marvel Studios’ biggest missed opportunities. Ali was an inspired choice for the role, and every report suggested he was fully committed, even spending more than a year training to become the Daywalker. Unfortunately, commitment from the star wasn’t enough to get the project across the finish line.

There were plenty of rumors that Ali could still appear as Blade in a future Midnight Sons movie before eventually leading his own solo film, but those hopes now seem to be finished. At least with Ali in the role.

Marvel Studios dropped the ball on Blade and it’s a shame. It’s crazy to me that they weren’t able to figure this movie out! It’s a pretty easy story to tell.

For a studio that’s built its reputation on bringing ambitious projects to life, letting an Oscar-winning actor like Mahershala Ali slip away without ever making Blade feels like one of the biggest opportunities the MCU has ever lost.
