Former Donald Trump loyalist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced she will resign from her Georgia seat in the new year, following a protracted public spat between herself and the president. The news comes after the GOP leader promised he would endorse a challenger if she sought reelection in 2026.
As reasoning for her departure, Greene said she does not want her constituency “to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president we all fought for.”
The staunch MAGA Republican has been the latest figure to be on the receiving end of Trump’s ire, as the POTUS has nicknamed her “Marjorie Taylor Brown (Green grass turns Brown when it begins to ROT!)” and “Marjorie Traitor Greene” with varying levels of success.
In both a written and oral statement posted to her official X account, the congresswoman and avid conspiracy theorist acknowledged her rift with the party, resulting from her breaking with the base on issues related to healthcare, corporate welfare and foreign relations. She has notably critiqued the administration’s aid to Israel, citing her America First stance, ineptitude to tackle affordability for constituents and been adamant about the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files.
“I’ve always represented the common American man and woman as a member of the House of Representatives which is why I’ve always been despised in Washington DC and never fit in,” she began, continuing later, “No matter which way the pendulum swings, Republican or Democrat, nothing ever gets better for the common American man or woman. The debt goes higher. Corporate and global interests remain Washington’s sweethearts. American jobs continue to be replaced whether it’s by illegal labor or legal labor by visas or just shipped overseas. Small businesses continue to be swallowed by big corporations. Americans’ hard earned tax dollars always fund wars, foreign aid, and foreign interests. The spending power of the dollar continues to decline. The average American family can no longer survive on a single bread winner’s income as both parents must work in order to simply survive. And today, many in my children’s generation feel hopeless for their future and don’t think they will ever realize the American dream, which breaks my heart.”
Defending her ultra-conservative voting track record, Greene then lamented that, despite Republicans’ majority, “legislature has been mostly sidelined,” blasting the government shutdown in yielding “disgusting political drama” rather than a cogent healthcare plan and censuring Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (whom she previously failed to oust from his post).
In the letter, the 14th district representative also touted her allyship with Trump — saying she “fought harder” than other officials, spent “millions of my own money” and missed “precious time” with her family to support the GOP leader — meanwhile “Establishment Republicans, who secretly hate him and who stabbed him in the back and never defended him against anything, have all been welcomed in after the election.”
Greene noted her final day in office will be Jan. 5.
ABC News senior political correspondent wrote on X that she spoke to Trump about Greene’s resignation, and he called it “great news for the country.” Then, Trump talked of his meeting earlier in the day with Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected Democratic socialist mayor of New York. Trump said that they had a “great” meeting and “good chemistry.”
Trump also posted a gallery of photos of himself with Mamdani on Truth Social.
