Dolly Parton, the singer/songwriter, actress, entertainer and philanthropist whose extraordinary career made her one of the most enduring figures in American music, has died at 80 after a brief battle with an undisclosed form of cancer. Parton passed asst today (Aug. 25), according to an announcement posted to her official Instagram by her nephew Bryan Seaver on behalf of the Parton family.
The news arrives after a year in which Parton’s health had increasingly become a public concern. In September 2025, she announced that she was canceling a planned six-show December residency at Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace while undergoing medical procedures, joking that it was time for her “100,000-mile check-up.” She subsequently withdrew from the Motion Picture Academy’s Governors Awards, where she had been scheduled to receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
Yet Parton remained creatively active. She participated in the development of Dolly: An Original Musical, which had its pre-Broadway engagement at Nashville’s Belmont University this summer, and was involved in Dolly Parton’s Threads: My Songs in Symphony, which premiered in Nashville in March. Her last album was 2023’s Rockstar, a sprawling collection of collaborations that saw Parton finally embrace the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame designation she had initially resisted. Parton’s husband, Carl Dean, died in March 2025 at 82, after nearly 58 years of marriage.
Her nephew’s announcement was notably intimate, with Seaver recalling a lifetime spent alongside his aunt. As Parton’s head of security for more than two decades, following his father Larry in the role, he said he had known this moment would eventually come because “this video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago before I fully absorbed it as a future reality. It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness,” Seaver said. “But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly. Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens.”
Seaver also reflected on Parton’s extraordinary reach, from the family that knew her privately to the generations of artists who found a path through the doors she opened.
“Dolly also opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians, and dreamers from every walk of life and across every continent,” he said. “By her example, we believe that anything was possible. She never saw a door she couldn’t open, and the doors she opened made and changed history.”
That influence extended far beyond country music. Parton’s songwriting became a common language across genres, while her film and television work transformed her into a uniquely recognizable pop culture presence. For Seaver, her ubiquity made her something larger than a star: “She has always been on your television, your record player, your CD, and on your phone playlist, becoming an extended part of your family whether you liked it or not.”
He closed with an image that feels particularly fitting for Parton, whose rhinestone-covered aesthetic was inseparable from the generosity and work ethic underneath it. “Dolly was a farmer just like her daddy. He farmed the soil, she farmed songs and happiness,” Seaver said. And, he revealed, Parton had already imagined how she wanted to rest after a life spent performing: “Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton because after a life wearing heavy rhinestones she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest.”
“Rest in peace Aunt Dolly and Granny. Gigi,” Seaver said. “May God bless Dolly Parton and may God bless you all. She will always love you.”
Parton’s career began in rural Tennessee, where she was born one of 12 children and grew up in a one-room cabin in Sevier County. After moving to Nashville as a teenager, she established herself first as a songwriter before becoming a recording star in her own right. She joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1969 and scored her first No. 1 country single with “Joshua” in 1971, beginning a run that would make her one of the most successful and prolific artists in the country genre.
Her songwriting catalog became one of the great foundations of American popular music. Parton wrote songs including “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You” and “9 to 5,” compositions that repeatedly transcended the country genre through recordings by artists including Whitney Houston and other generations of performers. Her own recording of “I Will Always Love You” became a signature song, while her songwriting and distinctive voice helped make her a crossover star without requiring her to abandon her country roots.
Parton’s ambitions extended well beyond music. Her 1980 film debut in 9 to 5 established her as a movie star, and she followed it with roles in films including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone and Steel Magnolias. She also became a formidable businesswoman, most notably through Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park that grew into one of the region’s major tourist attractions.
Her honors eventually reflected the breadth of that career. Parton was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999, received the National Medal of Arts in 2005 and was honored by the Kennedy Center. At the same time, Parton turned her success into an unusually expansive philanthropic legacy. Her Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library grew into a global early-literacy program, while her broader charitable work supported education, health care, disaster relief and the communities of her native East Tennessee.
Her humanitarian work was recognized by the Motion Picture Academy with its Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which she was scheduled to receive in 2025 before health issues prevented her from attending.
