NANA celebrates 25th anniversary with punk rock Vivienne Westwood collab

After debuting a show-stopping collection at last weekend’s Paris Fashion Week, luxury fashion brand Vivienne Westwood has announced an exciting new collaboration with VIZ. If you’re like me and love fashion as much as you love manga, the recently announced collab between the two iconic brands is perfect for you. On October 6, 2025, Cosmopolitan exclusively revealed that in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Nana, written and illustrated by the elusive mangaka Ai Yazawa, a new cover design was being created in collaboration with Vivienne Westwood.

One of the bestselling manga of all time, Nana is about two young women, Nana Komatsu and Nana Osaki, who have the same name and share their lives despite numerous challenges. It is known for its iconic punk and post-punk fashions, inspired by the ethos of fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, such as tartan prints, corsets, safety pins, and platform boots. Inspired by the mangaka’s fashion school education, her works use fashion to tell a story that mirrors the inner world of her characters.

And Yazawa’s use of fashion is uniquely Japanese. “While many Western critics saw Westwood as veering into self-parody, Japanese subcultural spaces saw continuity and meaning,” writes Gill Princen for Yokogao. “Westwood’s embrace of history, irony, and gender fluidity spoke volumes in a Japan negotiating its own generational identity crisis during the post-bubble era.”

“In Yazawa’s world, rebellion doesn’t mean burning the system down, it means surviving it. It means walking through Shinjuku Station with your head held high, even when your heart’s been ripped out. In Westwood’s punk, there was fury. In Yazawa’s, there’s defiance laced with tenderness.”
