Netflix Rumored to Be Developing New Series Based on THE PHANTOM — GeekTyrant

It looks like The Phantom might finally be getting another shot at live-action glory. A new rumor is spreading online claiming that Netflix is developing a series based on the classic comic strip hero. There’s no word yet on whether the project will be animated or live-action, but signs point toward the latter.

Originally created by Lee Falk in 1936, The Phantom became one of the earliest costumed heroes in pop culture, paving the way for the superheroes that would follow. The character has seen countless adaptations across comics, TV, film, and animation, though none have quite managed to capture the enduring mystique of The Ghost Who Walks.

Most fans will remember the 1996 live-action film starring Billy Zane, which has since developed a cult following despite its box office failure.

The last live-action attempt came in 2009 with a short-lived TV series that lasted just one season. A potential film reboot was in the works in 2014 with executive producer Drew Simon and The Mark Gordon Company, but that project seems to have vanished into the shadows.

Now, if this new scoop from MTTSH is accurate, The Phantom could soon be swinging back into action on Netflix.

The character’s history is steeped in comic book legend. Falk once shared a fascinating story about the hero’s unexpected real-world impact during World War II.

“I learned that The Phantom helped keep up Norwegian morale while they were under the cruel occupation of the Nazis. The Germans controlled the Norwegian newspapers and were publishing false propaganda claiming that New York and Washington had been bombed and that the United States was being defeated by the Nazis.

“Unbeknownst to us at the time, The Phantom was being smuggled into Norway from Sweden and was being published daily in the Norwegian papers. The German occupation forces paid no attention to the comic strip and never realized it was of American origin, but the Norwegians were assured by the strip’s presence that the USA was still going strong.

“I’m told that it was considered a big joke on the Nazis and that ‘Phantom’ was one of the passwords of the Norwegian underground.”

Falk also explained how the character evolved over time:

“Today, The Phantom is no longer the absolute ruler of the jungle, but is instead a friend of the jungle folk. He’s no longer feared except by the bad guys. He’s more of a peacemaker.”

Even though The Phantom isn’t the household name it once was, there’s still a loyal fanbase eager to see this pulp-era hero return to form.

The series’ potential on Netflix could give new audiences a reason to rediscover one of the first costumed crime-fighters in history, a hero who predated Batman and Superman and introduced the idea of a masked vigilante with no visible pupils, a look that defined superhero design for decades.

If the project is actually happening and moves forward, it’ll be interesting to see how Netflix tells Kit Walker’s story and his battle against the sinister Sengh Brotherhood. As the 1996 movie tagline reads:

“Kit Walker is the latest in a line of heroes known as The Phantom, whose powers are drawn from three ancient skulls, but now the Phantom’s enemies, the Pirates of the Sengh Brotherhood, have a new ally: the ruthless Xander Drax.”

Whether the rumor turns out to be true or not, would you tune in to a Phantom series on Netflix?
