For a while, KPop Demon Hunters felt like one of those breakout hits that got too big to ignore but still left one major question hanging over it: how fast would Netflix move to make more of it? Now, we finally have our answer, as the long-rumored sequel finally gets the update we’ve been waiting for.
Netflix has officially confirmed that a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is in the works, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning to write and direct the next chapter. The film will be produced once again by Sony Pictures Animation, and it marks the first project under Kang and Appelhans’ new exclusive multi-year writing and directing partnership with Netflix Animation. That is a pretty serious vote of confidence in a movie that has already become a full-scale global obsession.
The cast of the original film is led by Arden Cho as Rumi, May Hong as Mira, and Ji-young Yoo as Zoey, with Ahn Hyo-seop as Jinu, Yunjin Kim as Celine, Daniel Dae Kim as Healer Han, Ken Jeong as Bobby, and Lee Byung-hun as Gwi-Ma. Kang said, in a statement, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.” Applehans concurred, adding:
“These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation and story can come together.”

How Successful Is ‘KPop Demon Hunters’?
Netflix confirmed back in August that KPop Demon Hunters became its most popular film of all time, surpassing Red Notice with more than 236 million views at that point alone. The movie has only kept growing since then, with the streamer continuing to spotlight it as one of its biggest original successes ever. And the timing is practically perfect, because the streaming monster is going to conquer the Oscars too. This weekend’s show sees the movie as one of the biggest animated awards contenders. It’s nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden,” and major awards-prediction outlets currently have it ranked as the favorite to win Animated Feature.
That awards momentum has already been building for months. KPop Demon Hunters won Best Motion Picture – Animated at the Golden Globes and Best Animated Feature at the Critics’ Choice Awards, giving it exactly the kind of precursor run that tends to matter when Oscar voting gets serious.
