Last weekend, nestled into the cityscape of brick-bonded mid-rise buildings in Worcester, Massachusetts, the New England Metal and Hardcore Fest shook the foundation with a sonic assault — the likes of which only hit the ears of adorning fans once a year.
NEMHF began in 1999, making this the 26th year since its inception, surpassing a Silver Jubilee in both time as well as reverence. Notably, there have only been 20 events in total, as the festival was on a hiatus from 2017 through 2022. The Palladium, where the show is held, has been an industry standard for metal and hardcore shows alike since its inception in 1999.
Founder Scott Lee, who has expressed his love for the music, the people, and the community, started the festival to bring forth the best artists across multiple genres and sub-genres to create an event that meets the demands of both the listener and the show’s purpose — to highlight acts that find themselves nestled in the niche and historic rift between both heavy metal and hardcore punk rock.
Notable acts like Bane, Red Chord, Ingested, Better Lovers, Converge, Integrity, Escuela Grind, Terror, and even the historically-revered Suicidal Tendencies graced the stages of NEMHF over the weekend. All bands that have shaped their respective genres over the years.
Bane, Worcester hometown heroes and the de facto headliners of the show, were outstanding. Mutual expectations between myself and others attending were belittled by the sheer energy of the performance which was reflected, amplified, and refracted during countless anthem-laden singalongs and intimate crowd interactions.
It was a pleasure to be a part of it and I do wonder what the potential of bringing an extreme music festival like this to the west coast could be.
