Looks like this jaw-dropping pro football media scandal isn’t going away anytime soon — and if you thought it couldn’t get messier, think again!
So, in case you haven’t been paying attention, over the past couple of weeks, New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has found himself smack in the middle of a full-blown controversy after a series of eyebrow-raising photos surfaced linking him to NFL reporter Dianna Russini. And we’re not talking about a casual handshake or a quick hello between the two people who are both MARRIED (and not to each other!). No, we’re talking hand-holding, hugging, cozy breakfasts, and yes… even what appears to be kissing!
Uh-oh!
The timeline alone is enough to make jaws drop. First came photos earlier this month showing Vrabel and Russini looking very close at an Arizona resort from back in March, reportedly. That was already problematic, considering Vrabel has been married to his wife Jen since 1999. But then things escalated fast. Additional snaps showed the pair had been hanging out for a while, and all over the place.
And, then, just when it seemed like the story might cool off a little bit, yet ANOTHER bombshell dropped earlier today: throwback photos from 2020 (!!!) allegedly showing Vrabel and Russini kissing at a New York City bar.

And here’s where it gets even more scandalous: at the time those 2020 photos were taken, Russini was reportedly just months away from marrying her now-husband. So yeah… not exactly a great look for either party involved, considering they were both involved in serious relationships with other people.
Both Vrabel and Russini initially tried to downplay everything. For his part, he insisted the interactions were “completely innocent,” while she claimed the photos were being taken out of context and didn’t reflect a larger group setting. But eyewitness accounts painted a very different picture, with one source alleging to the media at one point last week that the two were “all over each other” when they were seen.
Yikes…
The fallout has been swift. Russini resigned from her role at the New York Times’ sports vertical The Athletic earlier this month, saying she didn’t want the controversy to define her career. Meanwhile, Vrabel announced earlier this week that he’d be stepping away temporarily from preparing the Patriots football team for the upcoming NFL Draft to focus on his family — and even seek counseling. So, yes, this has officially gone from rumor mill fodder to full-blown professional and personal crisis.
Which brings us to Thursday’s press conference, which literally just happened — and let’s just say, it was tense.
Facing reporters just hours after those latest photos went public, Vrabel kept things serious, somber, and very controlled. He didn’t dive into details or answer the burning questions everyone wanted addressed. Instead, he delivered a carefully worded statement that seemed aimed at damage control more than anything else. He started by saying:
“I take accountability for my actions and for the actions that caused distraction to the people that I care most about — my family, this football team, the organization and the fans. My previous actions don’t meet the standards that I hold myself to, they don’t. And I think it’s best for the two most important things in my life — my family and my football team — is for us to take the necessary steps to work together and to get done what I told them I’d give them, which is the best version of me.”
Uh-huh. That’s about as close as we’re going to get to an admission — or at least acknowledgment — for now.
He doubled down on where his focus lies moving forward, too, by adding:
“My family needs me this weekend and that’s where I’ll be.”
Throughout the presser, Vrabel repeatedly emphasized that his wife, kids, and team are his top priorities, making it clear he won’t be entertaining further questions about the situation. Sooo what was all that about accountability?!?!

The Patriots organization is standing by their guy, too — at least publicly, and at least for now.
In a statement released to the media on the same day, they made it clear they support Vrabel’s decision to step back and focus on his personal life while trusting their staff to handle draft duties in his absence:
“The New England Patriots fully support Mike Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family first, as well as his own well-being. Mike has been open with us about his commitment to being the best version of himself for his family, this team and our fans, and we respect the steps he is taking to follow through on that commitment. We are confident in the leadership and communication Mike has established with our personnel staff throughout this pre-draft process. While he will not be present at the facility on Saturday, we know the draft evaluations are complete and [football executive] Eliot Wolf and his personnel staff are prepared to execute our draft as planned this weekend.”
Still, the silence on specifics is deafening. No direct denial of the kissing photos. No real explanation. Just a lot of (empty?!) talk about accountability, family, and moving forward.
