“It’s a long shot, baby, I know it’s true, but if anyone can make it, I’m betting on me and you.”

These are the now-heartbreaking words musician Keith Urban once penned for then bride-to-be Nicole Kidman before they got married.

The lyrics come from his 2006 track Once in a Lifetime, written just before they got married in Sydney’s Manly that same year.

The world is reeling in shock over the news the pair have decided to call it quits after 19 years of marriage – and perhaps their very public displays of affection and even Urban’s love songs for Nicole might be why. There were absolutely no clues the pair were on the rocks.

Once In a Lifetime

“I can see it in your eyes, and feel it in your touch, I know that you’re scared, but you’ve never been this loved,” the lyrics to the upbeat but emotional song read.

“But we’re never giving up, ’cause I know we’ve got a once in a lifetime love.”

Urban once said that he penned the track about Nicole’s nerves about their relationship at the time, before they tied the knot.

“Nic was getting very nervous about the thought of marrying me,” he said on stage, according to a report by UPI at the time.

“She was saying things like ‘it’s a long shot’ … I knew she loved me, but I knew she was scared. I was trying to find any way I could to reassure her that I was going to be her man forever.”

The Fighter 

The 57-year-old just hit the stage for his High and Alive World Tour at the Giant Centre in Pennsylvania, USA, and noticeably dropped one song from his setlist – The Fighter.

The anthem, which was dedicated to Kidman, sparked controversy earlier this week.

A resurfaced clip recently showed him changing the lyrics to The Fighter to mention his guitarist Maggie Baugh, 25.

There’s no suggestion of anything romantic between the pair, but many thought this to be a sign that things in his marriage were not going well before the news broke.

The song includes the lyrics: “And it’s gonna take just a little time, but you’re gonna see that I was born to love you.

“I’m here to remind you, you’re my only one, let me be the one, To heal all the pain that he put you through, it’s love like you never knew… just let me show you.”

The removal of the song is to perhaps dull the headlines the song created, though it might not do much good.

According to People, the singer did decide to include a photo of Kidman and their daughters in a slideshow shown onscreen while he sang his 2024 song Heart Like a Hometown.

Gemini 

Gemini is another track inspired by Kidman from his 2018 album, Graffiti U.

It’s a bit of a different sound from Urban, and certainly, racy.

“She’s not quite a contradiction, she rolls with it… She’s a maniac in the bed, but a braniac in her head, and I know that everybody knows,” the lyrics read.

“The song is actually about Nicole – and she loves it,” he reportedly once told iNews.

Other tracks he penned for Nicole 

In 2006, he released the track Got It Right This Time (The Celebration), the same year of their marriage.

He re-recorded the song and changed the lyrics to reflect the strength in his marriage.

“And I think I got it right this time/ I mean, I know I do,” the re-recorded lyrics go.

“But as the song has evolved and grown, our marriage has evolved a lot,” he previously said about the tweak to The Boot.

He also reportedly wrote the track Thank You for Nicole, as well as Without You and Better Than I Am.

He also reportedly has a number of tattoos dedicated to his soon-to-be ex-wife; a neck tattoo that features her former nickname, Babygirl, her first name on his arm, her initials on his wrist, and her middle name ‘Mary’ across his knuckles.

They first met in 2005 at a G’Day LA event and tied the knot in 2006 in Sydney’s Manly.

People confirmed on Tuesday the sad news that the pair have separated after 19 years of marriage, with a source telling the publication that “[Kidman] she didn’t want this. She has been fighting to save the marriage.”

TMZ first broke the news of their reported split, with sources claiming they have been living apart recently.

It’s been reported Urban moved out of the family home in Nashville, with Kidman and their daughters remaining.

Page Six revealed Kidman has filed for divorce from the musician, citing “irreconcilable differences”, per court documents.
