At this weekend’s Fan Expo Boston, Ewan McGregor found himself inadvertently fueling speculation about his appearance in Ahsoka Season 2. In a lighthearted exchange, the actor mentioned that his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead — who plays the live-action Hera Syndulla — was shooting the second season of the Star Wars Disney+ series, prompting a flurry of reports claiming that he, too, had joined the series and would reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi. But context is everything, and the full conversation makes it clear: McGregor was talking about her involvement, not his own.
What McGregor Actually Said
During the panel, McGregor was asked: “Being a part of the franchise is one thing, but are you a fan of Star Wars as well?” McGregor replied simply, “Yes.” Then came the curveball: “What is your favorite installment that you’re not a part of?” His answer? “Well, I like watching my wife, you know, so I really enjoyed Ahsoka. I thought that was brilliantly done. It’s so funny, like, you know, she’s shooting the second season now and I know. Is that a secret?” McGregor was quickly reassured that it had been known since April that production on Ahsoka Season 2 is underway, which prompted him to continue his story.
McGregor followed with a slice-of-life anecdote: “Well, she is anyway. And so I just finished doing a play. So I’m at home with our son, who’s four, and I take him to school and everything. And then I’m, you know, bumbling around the house and I’d fetch a FaceTime. I forget that she’s going to be green, you know. She pops up, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, oh yes.’ You know, often she’s in her trailer without all the head stuff on, but she’s just green, you know. She’s a very beautiful green lady, so. I love that.”
When a FaceTime Becomes a Headline
Online, the moment was quickly taken out of context. Headlines began claiming McGregor had confirmed his own appearance in Ahsoka Season 2, although this is taken out of context from McGregor’s actual comments. McGregor’s comments were a playful aside about home life and Winstead’s work as Hera, not a casting announcement. He never said he’d be in Ahsoka Season 2, just that his “very beautiful green lady” was already filming it. Sometimes, a FaceTime from the set is just that: no lightsabers attached.
Season 2 of Ahsoka does not currently have a release date.
