Though season 2 of Netflix’s One Piece series isn’t even out yet, fans are already looking ahead to season 3. Part of this is that the series’ cast has been so open about their appearance in the highly anticipated release. Still, while fans might have expected the return of stars like Luffy actor Iñaki Godoy, it has now been confirmed that Garp actor Vincent Regan will make an appearance in the third season.
In a video filmed for Cameo, Regan dropped a reference to filming for season 3 of Netflix’s One Piece.
I can’t wait for season 2, and I’m looking forward to filming season 3, I hope you enjoy it. It’s gonna be bigger and better than season 1, if that is at all possible.
While casual fans might not think anything about Regan’s message, those who are familiar with the anime and manga source material might be surprised.
One Piece’s Marine Expansion Is a Big Mistake
Given that the expectation is for One Piece season 3 to cover the second half of the Alabasta story arc, it is strange to hear that Garp’s actor is returning.
Garp has no major appearances during the Alabasta arc, suggesting that his presence will be added material not found in the manga or anime.
If that is the case, then it could be setting One Piece up for a big mistake.
While the Marines are an important part of One Piece’s story and are a fairly significant antagonist for Luffy, they are far from the focus of the series. If anything, the Marines are merely the arms of the series’ true antagonists, the World Government broadly and Imu more specifically.
By focusing too much on the Marines, or by giving them too much screen time, the series is taking the spotlight away from the Straw Hat crew.
This is a notorious problem with many Netflix shows. While series like Stranger Things have fans, their critical reception dwindles over time due to a bloated cast of characters. There is a reason that season 5 of Stranger Things has the series’ lowest Rotten Tomatoes score.
One Piece’s Marines Problem Suggests Broader Problems With Netflix’s Series
While season 1 of One Piece bought Netflix a lot of goodwill from fans of the manga and anime, that could evaporate if the streaming giant doesn’t keep a consistent quality.
One Piece is famously one of the longest anime of all time, so the idea that Netflix would add scenes when they have more than enough canon material is confusing.
Still, it remains to be seen whether the Garp additions will be positive or negative for One Piece. The first season surprised everyone with its tremendous quality, so fans can only hope that it remains consistent with One Piece season 3.
