Philip K. Dick & William Gibson’s Streaming War Is The Cyberpunk Event Of All Time

The two founding fathers of cyberpunk are about to go head-to-head for the first time in screen history, in a streaming war that’s set to take the whole of television by storm. Philip K. Dick is revered as a titan of dystopian sci-fi who’s set the tone for almost everything that’s come after him in the subgenre, while William Gibson has spent the past four decades redefining the borders of literary science fiction.

Ever since the release of Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner movie, which is based on Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, in 1982, an unspoken rivalry between the works of the two authors has had a profound impact on the entire cyberpunk canon, from The Matrix to Altered Carbon. Now, they’re both chiefly responsible for two series which look set to determine whether Prime Video or Apple TV is the undisputed champion of sci-fi streaming.

Amazon’s offering will be the first small-screen release in the Blade Runner franchise, Blade Runner 2099. Meanwhile, Apple TV’s Neuromancer will be the first screen dramatization of Gibson’s novel, period, delivering a viewing experience many considered unfilmable, 42 years after the novel’s publication.

Given the wealth of talent involved in each project, there’s a good chance that both will become instant classics, immediately entering contention for the best cyberpunk TV show of all time. It’s arguable that Blade Runner 2099’s slightly earlier release gives it an initial advantage, as Prime Video looks to dethrone Apple TV in the streaming genre it’s dominated for the past five years.

Blade Runner’s first TV show premieres on Wednesday, November 25, with Prime Video dropping all eight episodes at once. On the other hand, Apple TV will debut Neuromancer on Friday, January 22 next year, and will release one of its 10 episodes each week until the finale arrives in mid-March.

One series rests on a long-established screen legacy which includes a movie universally regarded as an all-time great, and one of sci-fi’s highest achievements. The other fulfills the long-anticipated task of bringing a fabled literary landmark to television, drawing on celebrated adaptations in other media, and decades of fan dedication. This streaming war is surely prestige TV at its finest.

The cyberpunk rivalry between Blade Runner 2099 and Neuromancer feels like a destiny for the genre that was written the moment William Gibson saw Ridley Scott’s finest cinematic achievement in a theater, back in 1982. Which TV series comes out on top is anybody’s guess.

At this stage, it’s impossible to choose between directors as impressive as Jonathan van Tulleken and J. D. Dillard, or lead actors like Michelle Yeoh and Callum. The point is, surely everybody wins.

Cyberpunk’s 2 Greatest Franchises Have Been Rivals Since William Gibson’s Debut Novel

It’s no accident that comparisons have been drawn between Blade Runner and the works of William Gibson ever since the mid-1980s. Even Amazon has already got in on the act before now. Prime Video’s 2022 miniseries The Peripheral, an adaptation of Gibson’s 2014 novel, feels eerily like a Blade Runner prequel.

Gibson claims that he’s never really been influenced by the works of Philip K. Dick, instead citing Thomas Pynchon as his biggest inspiration. Nevertheless, the specter of Blade Runner has loomed large over his entire cyberpunk oeuvre for the best part of half a century, as he himself has acknowledged.

When the movie came out, Gibson was hard at work writing Neuromancer, which would become his debut novel two years later. “I was afraid to watch Blade Runner in the theater because I was afraid the movie would be better than what I myself had been able to imagine,” he recently revealed to The Paris Review. However, he still went to see it on the big screen, and what he saw terrified him:

“I was right to be afraid, because even the first few minutes were better. Later, I noticed that it was a total box-office flop, in its first theatrical release. That worried me, too. I thought, Uh-oh. He got it right and nobody cares!”

If Blade Runner didn’t make any money in theaters, Gibson thought, no one would be interested in picking up his novel, which features a remarkably similar antiheroic protagonist, and a near-future dystopia constructed with many of the same building blocks, albeit with some key differences. Both apply archetypal noir tropes to speculative yet grounded stories set in two of the most horrifyingly realistic tech futures ever imagined.

If Blade Runner’s Rick Deckard is a hired gun for flesh-and-blood automatons, then Neuromancer’s case is a mercenary master thief for digital disruption. Both are deeply cynical reflections of a potential AI singularity that feels frighteningly possible in 2026. It’s no surprise that they were both arose from many of the prototypical sci-fi sources, as Gibson has noted:

“I met Ridley Scott years later, maybe a decade or more after Blade Runner was released. I told him what Neuromancer was made of, and he had basically the same list of ingredients for Blade Runner. One of the most powerful ingredients was French adult comic books and their particular brand of Orientalia – the sort of thing that Heavy Metal magazine began translating in the United States.”

Neuromancer’s author will no doubt be glued to his television when Blade Runner 2099 – which is executive-produced by Scott – arrives on Prime Video. He then faces a nervous wait to find out whether a mainstream audience takes to the long-awaited screen adaptation of his original cyberpunk masterpiece.
