Princess Catharina Amalia of the Netherlands was a vision in red on Monday as she stepped out to pose for a photograph during the King’s Day celebration, the Dutch national holiday celebrating the birthday of King Willem Alexander, who turns 59 on 27 April.
The King’s eldest daughter, 22, opted for an incredible crimson suit featuring wide-leg trousers and a single-breasted blazer. She wore the blazer buttoned up and slipped a V-neck camisole underneath.
Opting for a bold monochrome moment, the princess also slipped on a pair of red stilettos with a pointed toe. The final addition was a gold clutch which mirrored the sandy blonde hue of her hair, which was styled in loose waves to frame her face.
Red was a daring colour choice for the occasion. Fashion stylist and colour expert Constance Richardson previously told us that red is “universally associated with power, passion, and leadership, making it the perfect colour when you want to look in control.”
Amalia’s sister, Princess Alexia, 20, also got the red memo, opting for an A-line dress with leather heeled boots and a jacket to match. Meanwhile, Queen Maxima, 54, opted for a more muted colour in her camel cape and hat and Princess Ariane, 19, chose a white co-ord.
Princess Amalia’s daytime chic
The outing came after Amalia embarked upon a solo two-day official tour of Amsterdam in a decidedly more understated outfit. The future queen sported a slinky bodysuit, as identified by Royal Fashion Police on Instagram as Max Mara’s ‘Nigella’ style.
It featured a wrap-style top and long sleeves. She styled the bodysuit with navy wide-leg trousers and stylish heeled boots. Meanwhile, the princess accessorised with a clutch by high-street brand Zara.
Fashion stylist Leanne Jones told us at the time that heiress Amalia’s casual chic was an indicator of the kind of modernity she signals for the future of the Dutch monarchy.
A fashion statement
“This is a masterclass in smart-casual dressing and signals a wider shift in how modern monarchies are choosing to present themselves. We’ve seen it within the British royal family, too, where more relaxed and contemporary looks are becoming not just accepted, but expected,” the stylist explained.
“What stands out here is the confidence behind it. Princess Amalia is clearly expressing her own style – from her oversized earrings to the style of her hair, to the outfit itself. In doing so, she is making the monarchy feel more accessible and in step with the world around it, and that’s hugely admirable – and relatable.”
