In case you missed it, Sonic the Hedgehog recently joined Fortnite, and Sonic Team’s boss Takashi Iizuka has now revealed how this collab got approval from Sega.
Speaking to IGN, Sonic team was approached by Epic Games “more than a couple of years ago”, but the blue blur is a character who will “never hold a gun”, according to Iizuka. So, the teams took some creative liberties.
It turns out the blue blur you play as in Fortnite’s new update is actually “Android Sonic”. Here’s Iizuka’s translated story about this (via IGN)
Takashi Iizuka: “Sonic is a character that will never hold a gun and when thinking about kind of the game design of Fortnite, it’s really hard to think about Sonic being in this game…but this time we took the creative liberty and created ‘Android Sonic’ and because we made this android version of Sonic, we were able to get this android Sonic into Fortnite, have him hold a gun, and have him be able to really play inside of the Fortnite gameplay and be able to be intergrated into Fortnite.”
So, if you were wondering how it is acceptable for the famous Sega mascot to go around blasting guns in Epic’s free-to-play battle royale, it’s because it’s technically not actually “Sonic”. Unsurprisingly, Iizuka’s comment about this collab has already got the fandom referencing Shadow’s ’05 outing.
