Inspired by the 1968 dystopian science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Blade Runner became a cultural phenomenon after it was adapted into a live-action movie courtesy of Ridley Scott back in 1982. However, nobody truly anticipated the influence of the dystopian movie, set in a world where synthetic humans known as replicants walk the earth.
Not only did 1982’s Blade Runner help revolutionize the sci-fi genre, but it has since gone on to inspire 2017’s Blade Runner 2049, and the upcoming Blade Runner 2099.
Created by Silka Luisa for Amazon Prime Video, Blade Runner 2099 will star Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer operating in 2099 Los Angeles. Following an uprising, replicants are at the top of the pecking order, with humans now considered as second-class citizens. Set to air on 25 November 2026, Blade Runner 2099 is one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year, but if you cannot wait until then to immerse yourself in the dystopian future, one other release may just make the lead-up a lot easier.
Blade Runner Explores a Brand-New Genre
Blade Runner: The Roleplaying Game offers exactly what it says on the tin, as 2-5 players can head to a neon-noir wonderland which will take their breath away. As the official item description reads:
An evocative world of conflicts and contrasts that dares to ask the hard questions and investigate the powers of empathy, the poisons of fear, and the burdens of being human during inhumane times. An iconic and unforgiving playground of endless possibilities that picks you up, slaps you in the face, and tells you to wake up.
Time to live. Or time to die.
Set in the year 2037, the RPG begins shortly after the Wallace Corporation debuts the new Nexus-9 Replicants on Earth, and, as such, players will get the opportunity to play as either replicant or human. However, as a member of the LAPD’s Rep-Detect Unit, it will be up to you to “face impossible choices and find beauty and humanity in the stubborn resilience to keep fighting. To persevere through pain. To agonize over itches you can’t scratch. To do questionable and extraordinary things” all in the name of love, hope and redemption.
Become Replicant or Human
