Sam Smith has opened up about a horrifying skiing accident that left them unable to walk earlier this year.
The Latch singer, 32, had to be rescued from a ski slope after tearing their ACL, and faced months of tedious recovery.
Speaking on BBC’s Sidetracked with Annie and Nick Smith, who uses they/them pronouns, revealed they were forced to focus on “mental stuff for the last seven months.”

Explaining the accident left them with permanent damage, Smith said they had been struggling with anxiety, and the recovery time allowed them to “get their s–t together.”
Despite being seen with a cane and a boot in New York City earlier this year, they addressed the issue for the first time in the new interview.

“I’ve been really focusing on my mental stuff for the last seven months because I actually broke my ACL,” Smith revealed.
“I completely ripped my ACL. I was skiing. I was an idiot and went on a black slope on the second day.
“I got taken down in a blood bag. It was the worst. It’s a permanent thing.”

They went on to explain what an ACL is and the impacts damaging it can have.
“It’s in between your bones and helps you jump and spring around,” Smith said.
“It completely ripped and I decided to go down the non-surgical route but I couldn’t walk for a month on this leg and it was awful.
“It was the first time I’d ever not been able to move and I was holding onto a bit of weight. I was very anxious. I used it as an excuse to get my s–t together.”
As they continue to recover from their traumatic injury, Smith will return to the stage next month for a performance at the BBC Proms.
