The Star Wars franchise is about to welcome another legendary actor into the mix, and it sounds like she already wants a return trip.
Sigourney Weaver stars in The Mandalorian and Grogu as New Republic officer Colonel Ward, and while the movie hasn’t even hit theaters yet, she’s already thinking about what could come next for Din Djarin and Grogu.
During a conversation about the upcoming Star Wars film, Weaver opened up about how much she enjoyed stepping into Jon Favreau’s corner of the franchise and hinted that she isn’t the only one hoping this movie sparks a bigger future for the characters.
“Well, in an ideal world, I’d love to make another Mandalorian and Grogu, because it was so much fun to work with Jon Favreau. And I’m a huge admirer, and just to be in this world, for me, it was cool. And I really like my character, and I’d love to do more work with Pedro and his sidekick.
“So, I think that, secretly, we’re all hoping maybe this could produce another one that would take us further into the Outer Rim and more adventures,” she adds.
Din Djarin and Grogu have always worked best wandering through dangerous corners of the galaxy, crossing paths with bounty hunters, Imperials, smugglers, and weird alien outlaws. The Outer Rim is basically built for that kind of storytelling.
In the film, Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and Grogu are tracking down Imperial threats on behalf of the New Republic while answering to Weaver’s Colonel Ward. They are then tasked with finding Rotta The Hutt. They’ll also have some backup from fan-favorite Star Wars Rebels character Zeb Orrelios, which should make longtime fans pretty happy.
One of the more interesting things about The Mandalorian and Grogu is that it apparently stands on its own much more than fans expected. Earlier plans for The Mandalorian Season 4 were said to help connect into Ahsoka Season 2, but the movie sounds more self-contained, which leaves plenty of room for Lucasfilm to continue these adventures if audiences show up for it.
It’s hard to imagine Disney wanting to walk away from Din and Grogu anytime soon if the movie lands the way fans hope it will.
The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22.
