The battle for Super Earth will be coming to the big screen, just not as soon as previously expected. Sony Pictures has reshuffled its slate of upcoming films, and the Helldivers movie has been bumped from its November 10, 2027 release date.
According to Sony, the Helldivers movie will now be released on June 9, 2028. Placing the film near the beginning of the summer box office season may be a sign of Sony’s confidence in the project. However, it also raises the question of whether Helldivers’ time in the zeitgeist will be over by then. Two years can be an eternity in the gaming realm, especially with live-service titles.
The original Helldivers was released in 2015, but the title that helped earn the franchise a film adaptation was Helldivers 2. The game was well-received when it was released in 2024 for PlayStation 5 and PC, but its popularity reached new heights when it was ported to Xbox Series X while supporting cross-platform play.
Sony has confirmed the recent report that Reacher star Alan Ritchson will have a leading role in the Helldivers movie as one of the soldiers who is tasked with defending Super Earth from an overwhelming onslaught of alien creatures and interstellar threats. Aquaman and A Minecraft Movie actor Jason Momoa was previously attached to star, but he dropped out of the film earlier this year.
Fast & Furious director Justin Lin remains attached to helm Helldivers. Beyond Ritchson, the rest of the cast has yet to be announced.
