Nearly 40 years after the original became a cult classic, the long‑awaited sequel to Spaceballs is officially set to hit theaters on April 23, 2027, with Amazon MGM Studios confirming the release date for what fans are calling Spaceballs 2.
The timing places the new film right around the 40th anniversary of the Mel Brooks‑directed original, offering a nostalgic thrill for longtime devotees of the spoof franchise.
Legendary filmmaker and comedy icon Mel Brooks returns to the franchise in multiple capacities, with roles both behind the scenes and on screen. Brooks, now nearing 100, reprises his beloved character Yogurt and is producing the film while lending his creative voice to the project that continues the spirit of satire that made the first movie a timeless favorite.
Original cast members are also coming back, adding to the anticipation. Rick Moranis, reprising his role as the hilariously over‑the‑top Lord Dark Helmet, makes a rare return to live‑action film after decades away. Joining him are Bill Pullman as Lone Starr and Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, along with George Wyner reprising Colonel Sandurz.
The sequel also introduces a new generation of talent, blending classic returnees with contemporary stars. Josh Gad headlines the updated cast while also co‑writing the screenplay with collaborators Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. The ensemble is rounded out by Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman (stepping in as Lone Starr and Princess Vespa’s son), and Anthony Carrigan, offering fresh comic energy alongside familiar faces.
Directed by Josh Greenbaum, whose credits include the comedy Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and Will & Harper, the sequel aims to capture the same irreverent tone and meta humor that helped the original film build its devoted fanbase. While plot details remain mostly under wraps, early reports suggest the movie will continue to poke fun at the broader landscape of franchise sci‑fi, including beloved staples like Star Wars, Star Trek and more.
Production on Spaceballs 2 wrapped in 2025, and now with a firm release date set for spring 2027, fans are preparing for a reunion nearly four decades in the making!
