Last month, Spiritual Cramp announced the follow-up to their 2023 self-titled debut and shared the self-deprecating “At My Funeral.” Today, the San Francisco punks are back with another preview called “Young Offenders,” which they played on their spring tour with Bad Nerves.
Frontman Michael Bingham tells AP that he penned “Young Offenders” roughly a year after relocating to LA. “I think the helicopters around Los Angeles are a funny thing,” he says. “They don’t exist in San Francisco. A funny (and constant) reminder of where you are. For years, I watched people leave San Francisco and head to Los Angeles in search of more success, and it always grossed me out. How could you move away from paradise? Where will you put all your jackets when you move to the desert? I wrote this song to let everyone back home know that my heart will always be there.”

If you’ve ever seen Spiritual Cramp, you know their image is extremely thought out, wanting to “convey a message without having to speak. I want to step into a room and have people look at me and be able to get a read of what I’m about. When our band steps onstage, I want that conversation to be had with the whole crowd.” That holds true with their latest video, where they spoof a late-night TV appearance (properly introduced as the “baddest band in the land”).
“Look, you wouldn’t know anything about this, but trust me. You’re gonna love it,” Bingham promises, tilting down his sunglasses. Then they blast into a raucous performance, the stage decked out like a retro New Year’s Eve party, while singing of warm San Francisco nights.
Next year, Spiritual Cramp will go on a North American tour in support of the new album, running throughout February and March. That includes a hometown show at Great American Music Hall, a historic venue where Sonny Rollins and Ry Cooder have cut live albums.
